Winterizing Outboard
#1
We are wondering what you need to do to winterize an outboard motor. We were going to take it in but if it is easy enough decided we could just do it ourselves. Thanks for the info.

Some folks like to fog the powerhead by spraying fogging oil into the carburator intake. Some just put fuel stabilizer in the fuel and run it long enough to make sure it is present in the carburators. Some folks like to drain the carburators. Fogging EFI motors is a little more difficult. If there is any possibility that your lower unit might have water in it, it is imperative that you get it out before it freezes or it will break. This is the main concern. If the seals in your lower unit are good then there is nothing to worry about.

Nothing to it: Put some Stabil in the gas tank on your last trip out. When you get the boat on the trailer the last time, disconnect your fuel line and let the engine run until it dies to remove extra gas. Be sure to lower the motor after the last trip and get every last drop of water drained from it, including the "piss hole". Disconnect the leads form the battery. I also change out the lower unit grease, which even I can do. (remove two screws, let it drain, refill, and re-insert top and bottom scres.) I also put in new plugs at this time, but don't do any fogging. I store with my gas tank full. Good to go.

My boat sits in the sub-zero arctic of Manila from December-April, and starts right up on the first crank come spring, and runs fine all summer.

Don't do it, just fish all winter - FG usually has open water all year by the dam - Lake Powell never freezes, just keep fishing brother.
