Does anyone know if the Wasatch Search and Rescue team could use volunteer search boats this weekend? I would like to volunteer my time and boat, but I wasn't sure if they wanted any additional boats in the search area? I would think boats with good quality fishfinders ( in sonar mode) and a GPS would be able locate something as large as a body below the boat. I know most of the S&R boats have high power side scanning sonar, but if enough boats with normal 2D sonar capability were coordinated, a large area of the lake could be covered.

Not to sound morbid or gruesome, but given some time, the bodies will float to the surface on their own. All the bacteria in the belly generate a lot of methane, and when they run out of food, the start digesting the host.

they stay down in the berry because of the cold water,I don't think their is much bacteria action. The body they did find was 2-3 years old.Cheerful thought, huh?

This is true, in deeper lakes bodies tend to get more of the refridgerator effect and not decompose due to colder temperatures and less oxygen available on the bottom. Shallower lakes I could see them floating to the top when it gets really hot out but not at Strawberry where depths are significant in places.

Our bishop is a member of UHP, and he was up there the day the one body was found. I would imagine you could get volunteer info either from UHP, or just call up to the marina.
He told me one of the bodies went in there was as much as 5 years ago. And yes, the cold water temps do hold them down. Once they've gotten so cold, and with water at its densest at 39 degrees, it almost "holds" them down there due to water pressure.
I sure hope they find this young couple before the ice caps the pond. How difficult that must be on their families.

[#505000]I would be worth checking into however I know on many of the Utah Lake searches they like to close the search area to non-search and rescue traffic.[/#505000]

[#505000]Although there are a lot of good samaritans who would love to help and would do a fantastic job, there are also a lot of yahoo's, and looky lous who tend to get in the way and cause more problems then give aid. Since there is no really good way to screen which is which it's often easier to search without the added help. [/#505000]

[#505000]Now that I've thrown a wet blanket over the idea... I would say it's at least worth looking into!! [cool][/#505000]
