Ice fishing fever -- cooled
#1
Billy (Tincanfsh) and I both had the ice-fishing fever really bad. I knew two small reservoirs that I had never ice fished before, but thought that one or both or them would have safe ice. Arrrived at the first one to only find 2 1/2 to maybe 3 inches of ice. We ventured out on it anyway (the water was only about 3 feet deep) to eventually approximately 75 yards. Fished it for about 1 1/2 hours and between the two of us we only had one bite and no fish. Headed over to the other small reservoir and found that the ice there was about 5 - 6 inches thick. Fishing was fast and furious for most of the day. Nothing huge, with the largest going about 14 inches, but between us we probably caught over 100 trout (most were rainbows with a few cutts thrown in). We had the entire place to ourselves all day long. Attached are a few pictures of Billy with his fish. It was sure great to get out on the ice again.

Pretty little fish. Glad you could get out and have a good time. What elevation are those lakes?

Good start Kent.
I'm jealous!
What was the bait of choice and was a fishfinder used?
Now if we can get some other closer lakes to freeze, I'll be a happy camper.

Small tubes, Forage minnows or Paddlebugs tipped with crawler worked the best. Caught a few also on mealworms. The first place we fished I discovered that my fish finder battery was too dead to run it. This was particularly frustrating because the battery was new (came with the ice fishing package that I purchased for my Lowrance) and I had charged it fully about a month ago. Just after getting to the second reservoir I remembered that I had a jumper battery in the Suburban so I ran back and got it. It fired the fish finder right up and I was able to use it the rest of the day. It was amazing to watch on the fish finder how many fish would swim up to the jigs but not bite. I also learned how great it is to finally have a fishfinder that is extremely portable and has an ice-fishing transducer. It is nice to be able to use the fish finder down the same hole that I am fishing.

[cool]Way to go, kent!!!!!!!! That's Awesome that you were able to get out and get 'er done! I think I can guess at least one of the two lake you were at. I'm hoping that the one I'm guessing in my head was the one that had 5-6 inches, because if so, that bodes well for the other lake that's up the canyon from that one that I'll be at Friday...

Lol, you found my secret spot!!!![Wink] Well, probably not the exact spot, but adjacent at least. Definitely equivalent in elevation. But your ice looks better than mine. My ice is getting a little rotten waaay toooo warm this week. My ice fever has cooled too.
