Early Ice Conditions
#1
Hi everyone; its time to come out of my eight month hibernation and get ready for a new season of ice fishing. I love this site, but only use it faithfully four months out of the year. Honestly I have only been fishing probably six times since ice off, and this only ranged from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Between teaching, professional proposals, and wildland firefighting I have very little time to fish[Sad]

I went out on Saturday to look around various fishing holes, and was actually surprised to see that Trail Creek Pond by Victor has ice on it. Only 1/2 inch, but it is completely frozen. No--I did not dare go out! Big Elk on PaliSades has zero ice; I am talking the section North of the main road. The fishing was really slow at PaliSades, but people who were trolling did quite well.

On Sunday I was quite surprised to find Roberts covered with about 10% ice. We just need a good cold week of weather, and we can start the season. It sounds like beginning on Thursday we will get quite a bit cooler. The bite for trout was fast, but they were hard to hook. My Son and I landed three small fish. Rexburg Ponds has no ice, but I am amazed that I did not catch a single fish. I know when it freezes it will be hard to keep them off the hook.

I hope to run into quite a few of you this ice season. I bought a Vexilar System and I am dying to try it out. I hope my catch rates increase this winter.

Welcome back. Thanks for the report. I hope to be ice fishing within a week also, but we will have to see what the weather does.

Thanks for the up date. I drove by Roberts Gravel pond on Wednesday the 22nd and could not see any ice from the interstate. It won't be long if this cold weather sticks around.

I was up on Glendale on Friday and the upper end is iced over and the lower bay as well. I wasn't very thick but I was surprised to see it. Wednesday when I was fishing up there there was no ice. I would guess with this cold spell it will get ready fast.

Thanks for the update. If the weather forecast is correct, I think there will be many places to ice fish in SE Idaho soon.
