Most success had ice fishing?
#1
I was just remembering the time I went to scofield with my good friend. I want to hear of anyone elses great stories. I remember a couple of years ago at this same time, everyone left the ice at 4:00 except us coming on to the ice. People thought we were crazy. We had our hut with heaters and had the best success ever for me on scofield. We shined every light we had onto the ice, and within minutes fins were everywhere. We only drilled 3 holes the entire night (8hrs) and had fish on almost every cast. The fish wouldnt even let it hit the bottom. The biggest was a 24 inch bow and the rest were nice football size bows. I dont recall even catching a fish under 14 inches. Used the same white jig the entire night with mealworms. It was at the south end off the main road. Great memories

I have a lot of good memories of ice fishing trips. One that stands out is a trip I took with my wife at Porcupine. It was several years ago and we fished at the top end of the resevoir. It was just off of where the spring comes into the lake. It was fish everytime our bait hit the bottom. We finally ran out of bait and left.

First trip last year to the Berry- MGB and I hit the ice one day and hit the jackpot. Everything "aligned" that day. We stopped counting at 50 each and put 6 over the slot on the ice that day. It was an amazing day.

But my overall best success was watching my 3 yr old son horse a 22" cutt through an ice hole at the Berry for 10 mins.

I'll long remember the day my dad and I caught this nice bunch of fish at Strawberry on the ice. 3 fish over 4 pounds including 3 bows (2 bigguns) and a 23 1/2 cutt! The bottom bow was the weirdest looking fish I had ever seen. Definetely stunted in length but it made up for it in depth and girth!

All of my best fishing has come while ice fishing. One of the best times was my first ice fishing trip in Utah. Over the Thanksgiving weekend of 2001, I went to Scofield and had a great time. I was new to ice fishing in Utah, and as a poor college student, my resources were slim. However, I got lucky and won fifty bucks at work so I took the money and bought an auger. With a bucket, my regular fishing pole, a few ice flies and jigs, and my new auger I was in business. I had heard that first ice was a great time to fish but wasn't expecting much success since I had very little experience fishing for trout. I would have been happy with just a few fish so I was very excited when I started catching fish as soon as I drilled my first hole. I caught a good mix of cutts and rainbows with some good sized fish interspersed. I don't remember exact numbers, but I was catching enough fish to keep me from realizing I had lost all feeling in my feet! Steel toe work boots really aren't too good on the ice. My budget didn't allow for good boots at the time; those had to come later. Even though my feet didn't completely thaw until I got half way home, I was completely hooked on ice fishing. I've continued ice fishing since then and have upgraded most of my equipment, but I'll always remember that first trip. I'm gonna be in Utah for Christmas this year and can't wait to get out and go ice fishing again.

Two years ago at the berry my son and I went fishing right after the ice cap. Ice was arond 3inches thick so we fished in front of the marina around 10:00 am we hand landed over 50 fish and I told my son at this rate we'll break over a 100 fish.At 2:00pm we had 99 fishes 6:00 pm still had 99 could not break a 100 so we went home.

Last year at soldier creek we went out on a beautiful, cloudless friday. It was my second time ice fishing (the first time was utter crap -- freezing weather, no fish, etc.) so I wasn't prepared for having such a good time. We were pulling in fish left and right, the biggest being a cutt around 26 inches (he barely came through the hole). Well, as we were furiously fishing, I noticed a golden eagle come over the hill and thought, "how cool...he's flying pretty low...ohh, he must see something because he's folding his wings...geez, it looks like he's diving right at us......." Our pile of fish was on the ice, not 15 feet away. He flew right over the top of my uncle, who was sitting down (my uncle told me afterwards he swears he felt the wing feathers hit his head as he fly over.) He sunk his talons in the biggest fish and tried to take off.

I was so stunned, I couldn't believe it. My friend had to go wave him off. He couldn't take off with the big fish, so he dropped it and flew a ways off and waited. We felt bad, so we threw him a 19 inch rainbow and he took that instead. Quite an exciting thing to have a bird of prey fly so close. We looked at the head of the big fish and noticed the talons went completely through the head and midsection like they were butter. Ouch. I'll always remember that day.

My favorite trip was in the winter of 200-01 It was my third trip ever. I went to Pineview and caught perch after perch. I have been hooked for life since then. It was a blast. I have also had some close second trips to Strawberry and Lost Creek.

[cool]Great topic! I'd say my best day was two years ago (March '04) at "The Rock." CBR and I fished about 200 yards away from the inlet and easily caught 100 fish each and about half of them were perch and half bows. It was a lot of fun, and the weather was at least 40 degrees after the sun was up the whole day.

Any time I get to walk on water is a great memory. There have been so many over the years.
Watching my son pull a back to back Bow over 30"; then a 28" Brown out of the hole on an un-named Utah lake was the best. We were Perch fishing and he did it on 4# test, on a shrimp-bow tipped with a wax worm.
Fishing the Gorge with BLM, my son, Polo, Wookie and BLM's friends was great too. Not that the fishing was all that great, but it was good to hear the young guy's stories of the rabid nightlife in Manilla. Us old guys were out by 9:30.
Taking the sleds out to the end of Mud Creek with TKB when most people wouldn't walk out there. Then crushing them and suddenly everyone on the lake has balls of stone.
Anytime I can get out with Dan and Liffy and Liffy actually catches a fish is great too.
The day the old guy crew (Liffy, BLM and TG) fished Rainbow Bay was awesome, even if the sled trip home was not.
P4L getting me with the 7UP can trick was the topic of conversation now that Jeffmig is back. I didn't mind.
But far and away my favorite was when me and a bunch of guys from work tried Cisco fishing through the ice for the first time. We ended up with 19 and thought we were heros. Then BLM taught me and Liffy how to do it for real and we realized we sucked badddddd. Me, him and Liffy went up a few years later and Liffy wouldn't stop netting them, even though we'd reached our limit in about 45 seconds, he was practicing catch and release. BLM asked him "Why are you still catching them?", he replied, "I just can't stop". I guess you had to be there.
I've met and fished and hunted with so many dynamite people I've met on this board over the years they are too munerous to mention.

IFG
I do love this site and will continue to post the how, whats and wheres, even if my recent post may not suggest that. You see, sometime I'm a spoiled child and want things my way. Since my Dads (TD and BLM) put me in my place, I'm much better now. Even a good kid needs an a$$ whopping now and again.
