Gear up! ODFW stocking large rainbow brood trout this week
#1
If you've never experienced the pull of a 12 to 22 pound rainbow trout on your fishing line, now is your chance.

Beginning Monday Dec. 11, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists will stock broodstock trout in the following locations:

- Walling Pond, Salem

- Walter Wirth Lake, Salem
- Junction City Pond, Junction City
- Sheridan Pond, Sheridan
- Huddleston Pond, Willamina
- West Salish Pond, Fairview/Gresham

"We chose these locations because they provide easy access to the public, are family-friendly, and they are all waterbodies that appear on our regular stocking schedule," said Jeff Fulop, Salmon Trout Enhancement Program biologist. "We have approximately 500 broodstock trout that we will disperse among the waterbodies."

Fishing techniques used for broodstock trout are similar to regular trout fishing. However, Fulop recommends using heavier fishing tackle than you would for the average rainbow trout. "Baits such as night crawlers or Power Bait will probably work, as would a variety of spinners," said Fulop.

According to Fulop, broodstock trout are always available this time of year as the hatchery completes spawning programs and determines how many excess fish can be provided. "The fish we're stocking this week came from the Roaring River Hatchery near Scio," said Fulop.
