Fished Strawberry today with Hoosier and Lloyd E. and his grandson. Because of a cold grandson Lloyd and grandson only made it to 11:00 AM. Fished The Ladders area (tried three places) and had the best luck at one of my honey holes that is almost exactly 1 mile from the parking lot. Ice is approximately 6 inches thick. There was about 4 inches of fresh snow on the ice, which made it really tough pulling the sleds. The wind started blowing about 10:00 AM and blew the rest of the day. Climbed in the ice shack for the afternoon and it sure felt good to be out of the wind. Ben and I caught approximately 30 cutts each. Caught them on whitish tubes and an orange/pink colored small plastic jig that I picked up somewhere (I think it was at Fish Tech). Tipped with chubs, (plain and salted), meal worms, meal worms with a couple wax worms added for good measure, and also caught several by tipping the jigs with PowerBait (Ben and I have no pride). Tried a crawler for awhile, but they weren't interested in that at all. Fished in approximately 35 feet of water and caught them from about 20 feet on down to the bottom. We caught several fish by seeing them on the fish finder and reeling up to them. No huge fish, a couple were just under the slot and the largest were probably just over 22 inches. The wind ended up being a blessing because it blew most of the fresh snow off of the ice, which made the mile hike back much easier than it was going out. Fun day and it was nice to meet and fish with Ben.

Nice report Kent,
Glad you got into the fish! Can you still drive all the way to the edge of the ice?

You probably could drive all the way to the ice, but you always face the possibility of someone blocking your way back out should they park in the end of the parking lot. The walk isn't that far by parking in the parking lot. A few years ago Utwalleye and I walked from the highway down (they hadn't plowed the road and parking lot), and my sled kept tipping over in the narrow path that we had to walk in.

Yep Chuck, we fished the same area that you took me to way back when. The entire bay is frozen.

Temps weren't too bad, it was the strong winds that made it miserable.

We (my grandson and I) had a great time at Strawberry, even though we had to leave at 11:00 am because of the bitter wind. He was able to catch a few fish, and build some memories with his grandfather, and I was able to catch a few and enjoy some great company. Thanks Kent and Ben for your kind, helpful demeanor with him. He really had a great time. I guess he got some water in his boots somehow, and that combined with his wet gloves and cold hands just made life miserable for him. He will remember the experience, however, for as long as he lives.
I was sorry we had to leave. I was having a great time catching those monsters. I can't believe that we caught so many large ones. Did you catch large ones all day long?

One other thing that I was going to mention. I dropped the AquaVu to the bottom for awhile and it was surprising how many fish were on the bottom, just below where the fish finder was showing. It also was interesting to note the number of fish that would swim by and were not interested in biting, or would just take the jig and immediately spit it back out. I did catch one fish by watching it take the bait and setting the hook before there was any movement on my fishing rod.

Yes, if anything the ones we were catching later were larger than the ones that we were catching while we were with you. I should have taken some pictures (at least one for the fishing contest), but I was nice and warm in the shack and didn't want to get out in that nasty wind, and I am hoping to catch an even larger cutt on New Years' Day.

Good to hear you made it out of the ice .That could be scary . Yea it is not a good idea to walk over moving water . The ladders is putting out some water this year so I would be careful around it . Here is a video of the ladders flow into the lake .

I don't get anywhere near where The Ladders enters Strawberry. I have noticed that the area right in front of that moving water is always the last to freeze and the first to melt. That moving water could have sucked you under the ice! Glad that you made it out alive.
