I decided to fish pineview again today with djremo and his kids.We started a little shallower than last time and ended up moving out to 53' anyway. After the move, i proceded to put the smack down on the crappies and large perch. I ended up catching 18 10"-13" crappie and 7 perch of about 7-10". After djremo left i was watching my crappie pole when a 40 or 41" tiger swam under my holes. I had a rod rigged and already suspended in 25' of water and reeled it up to just under the ice. Jigged it twice and he hit it like a rocket. He went clear to the bottom and i got him back to the ice and he decided to go again. After he peeled off 60 or so yards of line he came unbuttoned.[shocked] I finished out the night with a large crappie and headed in.
Here is where it gets BAD! The water level had dropped about 2' by the time i left creating a very bad situation. The ice on the edges had bowed down about 3' and created a divit extending about 15' out from the rocks. After a little while water started pouring into this bow. When remo left there was only 4 or 6" of water on the edges. When i left there was 3'+ and the ice had seperated at the bottom of the bow about 6". I tried to get through this and up the slippery slide with no luck at all and by this time i was soaked to my no-tellums. I could not move. With the water on the already slick ice i was stuck in 3' of water and holes on either side. This water was lakewide and the same conditions. Thankfully my sled floated and i pushed it as far as i could up the slide and threw the extra long rope handle around a large rock that was frozen in the ice. I grabbed the sled and pulled myself to the front and drug my body to the bank with the rope. A very scary experience to say the least.
As i got to my truck, i turned and saw about 8 people still fishing and figured they were in worse shape than i was. I called 911 and told them what was going on. They dispached search and rescue and hopefully got everyone off ok. I hate to tell everyone, but pineview is completely out of the question until that water re-freezes.[unsure]

Thats too bad about the tiger. If you had landed him you might have just been able to walk on water and not got so wet. I like fishing warm days but am always worried about something like that happening if the whole lake doesn't have a solid cap on it.

Not all Pineview is created equal. I played hockey in front of windsurfer beach, 3-6 pm today, with my wife and daughter, and did not have the issues that lunkerhunter had. 4 other guys were also skating. 6-8" ice, with only very limited water on the edge.
Be very careful on the view until this cold front forecast to come thru in the next 24 hours. It was 8 degrees warmer today than on Tues.

Atleast you still got your crappies home, right?...Glad you made it out, I was thinking about heading up there but I may wait it out a couple of weeks. That's a pretty scary thing to have happen. One of those "that won't happen to me" situations.

LH, man I'm glad you were able to get off that ice. I have been through thre ice before up to Lost creek and was in up to my armpits. I know how scary that can be , Glad you're alright. Too bad about that Tiger , that must have been a rush.

Dang Brody, that really sucks! Glad you could at least get into some fish though. I wonder why they are turning so much water out of the place? I can never figure out the water managers in this state. I think they are wee todd did.

Just because of your story, I finally decided to lay out the cash for some "Stabilicers" ice cleats. We were there last Sunday and slipped and slid all afternoon on that slick ice. Brody, glad that you lived to fish another day. Surprising that the water level could change so quickly. Too bad about you losing the large tiger, that would have given you a large lead in the ice fishing tourney, and would have forced us to try to catch our own tiger in order to compete.

Even at 3:30 I had to wade through 6 inch deep water to get to shore (of course my rubber boots were still in the truck!) The cleats saved me even then, because the ice sloped uphill toward shore and of course was extremely slick. Anyone who does brave that area must be prepared with cleats, rubber boots, and above all get off the lake before you're left marooned. [font "Arial Black"][black][size 3]If it refreezes enough around the edges during the night[/size][/black][/font] it might be OK, but it'll be risky. Like LH2 said, you absolutely need cleats because of the sloping ice. Forget about taking kids out there!
