Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update
February 21st – February 27th, 2003

Both Columbia River sturgeon fishing and spring chinook fishing are not going full blast right now. Competing bait for sturgeon success is certainly the culprit. And it's just plain too early for big spring chinook success.

Big news for the Columbia River gillnetters. We may be looking at an early closure. More details in the long version of this newsletter. The Willamette fish real well prior to the last rain event. It may be awhile before it fishes again.

The Santiams should get a shot wild fish as numbers climbed at Willamette Falls during the last low water period. The Sandy and Clackamas continue to put out consistent numbers of steelhead. A good portion of the steelhead on the Sandy River are wild. A mix of hatchery fish, broodstock fish and wild fish are available on the Clackamas River.

The north coast is producing consistent catches of mostly wild fish. The Nestucca, and Trask fished the best over the weekend but recent reports indicate we need a new rain freshet.

Sturgeon fishing on Tillamook Bay is not so good. Crabbing was good on Tillamook Bay last weekend. The Siletz and Umpqua Rivers have been very productive for some fishing guides. The Umpqua has slowed for sturgeon in the lower river with about half the fish hooked over the legal size limit. The Siuslaw has also been putting out consistent results.

Trout stocking this week took place in the Northwest Zone at Big Creek #1, #2 and Olalla Reservoirs, Walter Wirth Lake, Walling and Willamina Ponds. Henry Hagg Lake will get 20,000 rainbows on February 25th in preparation for the early opening this year on Friday, February 28th.
