Newton icefishing & conditions since the drought ended?
#1
Has anyone ice fished Newton? Are there any good sized fish or are the all small?

I've heard conflicting stories about Newton since the drought ended.

Conflicting stories:

(1) The drought killed off most of the fish in newton and their is a very low population of large fish and a larger population of small fish from the spawn. The Tiger's all died off.

(2) A large number of fish survived the drought and fishing has been good (source:Smith & Edwards)

(3) Most fish died off but DWR pulled a lot of fish out of Mantua and transplaned them in Newton.

Please reply if you have a good (acurate) source of infomation and thanks in advance.

BLM and I fished through the ice last year. We marked nothing, caught nothing, and saw nothing on the camera.

I hear from Muskyhunter that there are fish back in it this year. I have not fished since last winter so I can't say first hand about this year.

I've heard of Crappies being caught. Those things can live in a mud puddle. I've heard they've planted Tigers back in there...24"ish now. Small bass, crappy, perch, and occasional blue gill. I haven't heard of anything on the ice though. I'll put some feelers out.

I only fished Newton once this last summer. I saw quite a few real small crappie and bluegills, but not many larger fish when I trolled around. I feel like it is going to take several more years for Newton to get back to its pre-drought years. I didn't feel like it was worth going back to try it again last year. Acey
