East Canyon 1/9/07

Got off to WallyMartin's about 0800, grabbed my new license and 2nd pole permit, forgot the meal and wax worms and headed out.
Stopped at the Chevron in Morgan and got worms. (EEEWWW!!!)
Paid my $5 at E.C. State Park, got out my stuff, and headed down the ramp. What a beautiful day!! There were about 3 other groups when I finally started at about 0920.
I was in 31 feet of water between the buoys and had 7" of ice. It was a bit of slipperiness without much snow but the frozen slush wasn't very smooth, making for a surface that was easier to walk on.
Using a pink headed white rat finkee and meal worm, I soon caught the biggest fish of the day - a 15" fat rainbow. Threw him back to appease the Fish Gods and continued to catch a total of 18 until I left at 1:45. Chartreuse or white small jigs or ice flies seemed to work best with either meal or wax worms, didn't matter.
A fellow close by was using a smallish white Mr. Twister with a green head, wax worm, and a bit of green-sparkle Power Bait. He had caught at least 50 without working hard. His Humminbird sonar was a blast to watch, as you could see his itty-bitty lure and watch the fish come up or down to it. He was suspended at 15' and that's also where I caught most of mine. He also gave me some great tips on lake trout fishing and catching for when I go to Fish Lake.
All in all, a great day before the Ice Man cometh for the weekend.

On the way home, I saw 2 guys fishing by the dam and they had an ardent observer - a bald eagle sitting on the ice about 40' away from them!!

The second pole permit was worth the $15, so far. Gave me the chance to try different depths and lures. I had 4 doubles and that was a hoot - trying to juggle one fish while you reel in another!!
Tons o' fun!!
