Thermal socks
#1
I'm going to be exposed to the elements this weekend and after looking in my drawer I realized all my thermal socks were starting to wear out. My boots pretty much do the job alone but I'm not going to wear 'tube' socks in them. Is any one brand better than another? What type of material is the best? All my heavy socks are wool with some stretchy material in them. I need some lightweight thermal socks to wear under my heavy ones but don't know what to look for.

Stay away from cotton socks unless you want cold feet. Wool or a wool/polyester blend will keep you much warmer. Acey

Smart wool makes some light weight ones, I used to use them for skiing. They have been pretty durable also

[black]I've always liked the merino wools but this year I bought a pair of Cabela's 300 wt. polar fleece socks. When I got them, they looked pretty hokie. but after using them a few times, I was surprised how well they worked. I also have boots that don't need much help but I'm going to keep using the polar fleece socks. I think one of the things I like about them is they are loose on your feet which I think does not constrict your feet and allows plenty of air space to keep your feet warm.[/black]

I would vote for Smartwool's like Luke said. I have a few pairs that I have had for almost 8yrs and the get good use weather it is Ice climbing, or anything else. They last forever do not constrict any circulation. Sportsman's use to have the best price on them, i have not purchased any in a while so i do not know. The Expedition weight's usually run just under 20.00

I have several pair of Smart Wool brand socks. They are nice, but like BLM said any merino wool sock will do. I like to wear a thin liner sock against my skin, then a medium wool sock and over those I wear a pair of Hodgman neoprene socks. The line will keep any moisture away from your skin which will in turn keep you warmer. Another thing that I have done to keep my feet warm was to put a fleece insole in the bottom of my boot. This made a very noticable difference.

Good luck fishing.

No fishing this weekend, Bearclaw is taking me on an elk hunt in zero degree weather. After a trip to Cabelas (and some depletion of the rathole account) I should be good to go! I got the Under Armor socks, and some other impulse buys, they should do just fine as a liner sock. Thanks for the input.
