We headed up to Firehole Canyon again. We arrived around 1:00pm and left around 8:00pm. The intent was to fish for lakers and rainbows during the day, and try the evening burbot bite. Surprisingly, we were the only group on the ice. Ice was at least 14-18 inches, and air temps were around 10F during the day and -3F when we left. There wasn't any wind, so the conditions were relatively comfortable.
The group iced several rainbows between 12-14 inches while fishing in 20 to 30 ft of water. They were hitting jigs tipped with meal worms. I iced a couple of lake trout. One came in the late afternoon, while jigging for rainbows at 20 ft over 40 ft of water. The other came after dark, while fishing for burbot in 28 ft of water. The group also caught a total of 5 burbot before calling it a day. For burbot, we were fishing in 20-30 ft of water, just off the rocky slope, east of the boat launch. Three of the anglers got to mark another species off their list. They were pretty excited! Burbot were hitting glow jigs tipped with sucker meat, only inches from the bottom.
It was a fun trip and a new angling experience for some. We cooked up some burbot on the ice, so everyone could taste what they've been missing! Enjoy and good luck.

I did get some pics, but most of them didn't turn out. Digital cameras don't enjoy the cold. Here's a pic of my first burbot, caught on Dec 30th. He's small but noteworthy. Check out the camo!
It was good to get into them again. It wasn't the first event; we hooked up with 13 burbot in the same locale on December 30th. Fish ranged from 14-22 inches and put up quite a tussle. Better go get 'em while their hot!

Thanks for your report. I'm interested in trying for bourbot; are they hard to catch? Do they bite at night better than the day? How big of a glow jig and what color of glow? Any information to teach me would be appreciated!

I'm curious as to how you did at the gorge? Did you get into the bourbot? How was the other fishing/catching?

[size 1]How big of a glow jig and what color of glow? You're pretty shallow, 20-30 ft, so I would go as light as a 1/4oz. head. We were using the green glow jigs and heads.[/size]

Happy New Year!� Just thought I'd send you a photo of the results we had when we went fishing up at Firehole boat ramp on the upper end of the reservoir last Saturday night.� We were targeting burbot to see if we could pinpoint some techniques on how and when to catch them.� We iced 13 burbot in about 5 hours (4:30pm - 9:30pm) and lost a few more.� Fish ranged in size between 13 and 23 inches.� Pretty scary catch rate.� Hate to think how many more are out there.� From the literature, ours and others experience, looks like it's going to be mostly a late afternoon early evening bite.� As I had already experienced from back in MN, table quality is excellent. �
Glow spoons and� glow jigs tipped with sucker meat, crayfish meat or shiner chunks seem to work best.� Pretty light bite on most.� Fished in 20 - 25 feet of water close to shore off a rocky cliff.� From stomachs, they're keying in on crayfish as a food source.

Thats right, you didn't catch anything, because you weren't wearing the recommended gear. You must have been pacing around to keep your feet warm, instead of paying attention to your rods! Have you placed an order yet? I can send you some product info and a suggested vendor!
