Ice fishing Willard Bay
#1
[black]Hit Willard today. Saw a guy at the mouth of the North Marina with two large catfish and he said he lost another at the hole. We were going to run snowmobiles across the lake; ice is 11" thick but the ranger told us no offroad vehicles allowed and he was enforcing it.[/black]

[black]We drove around to the southwest corner, packed our crap over the dike, and fished most of the day. Fish were there but not many takers. Petty had the most hits but couldn't get a hook in any. I had one bite and tons of drive bys. Maybe another day those drive bys will turn to bites.[/black]

Glad you could make it up Rich. Crazy that they won't let a sled onto the ice...like they are so much more clean than boats! Sure makes you wonder what the argument is for keeping them off?

they changed that law in the last couple of years... they slipped it by everyone.. he is right.. if it is not posted for ohv use then ohv use is prohibited..

The idea of ice fishing willard is very intreresting. Might even be worth putting off my revenge on Jordanelle this weekend to give it a shot. Too bad about the OHV rule, would be nice to run to the island.
Is the south marina open? That might not be a bad spot to set up, just outside of the marina where there is a little flow.
Is there any snow on the ground around the southwest dike? Could you drag your stuff or did you have to pack it up and over?

[black]The south marina is closed for thr season with a locked gate closing the road. there is 1 " of snow on the ice and very little if any snow on the ground. We made two or three trips and packed our gear over. My suggestion, travel light! Once on the ice, travel is easy.[/black]

Thanks for the report. Wiper thru the ice.... now that would be a blast! [Smile]

How deep was the water you were fishing?

It IS a blast!!![Wink] Iced quite a few in years past, before the drought shoved them out of the N marina. Was hoping for some repeat this year but now they drained it.[Sad] When a 4 1/2 lb wiper lightly taps your lure and you set the hook......well, the best way to describe it is a carp gone haywire. Even with 12lb line I had to insert the bended pole into the hole several times......needless to say I was not using a short ice rod......no leverage.

I was planning a trip up to W-bay last Saturday but I was convinced that Deer Creek would produce better. WRONG! I am planning a trip up to the Bay this Friday. Without giving away all your secrets, can you tell me what depth were making your offerings in?

[black]Not many secrets when you can't hook a fish! We fished from 8 ft to the deepest we could find and that was about 15 ft. Most fish were see in 9-12'.[/black]

Willard isn't looking real good for boaters this year, things may change if we get some more snow. It might be a tubers dream in the spring. Just think, sittin' in the toon 200 yards from shore dragging a jig for some eyes and no skiers. This pic is from one week ago, the water sure is low.

Nooooo dont say that !!!!!!![pirate] Man now that i have a boat last year it was fun trolling for those wipers. My kids loved catching them . [Wink] Hopefully we get a lot of snow the next month or two. I dont mind tubing willard but then i have to leave the kids on shore with their mom.

They've got to stop draining the thing before it will fill up. I wonder if they have found/patched up all the leaks yet?
