LOCAL NEWS PAPER
#1
Got a charge out of todays ice fishing report in the Explore section.

KOKANEE FISHING IS HOT, USE A PINK RAT FINKEE TIPPED WITH A WAXIE ON A 10 INCH DROPPER BELOW A KASTMASTER FISHED IN THE TOP 20 FEET OF WATER IN THE 60 TO 100 FOOT DEPTH.

Kind of think I've heard or read this before some place, I guess some one has to earn a living off what we give away for free on this site.[cool].

That's great! Perhaps you should call them on it and maybe they will offer a little kick back.[Wink]

ive noticed this too. i just finished thumbing through my grandpas latest issue of fishing and hunting news, and i think they are checking the forums as well. also, it is amazing how old some of their info is! they claim that the ice in the bays of the berry are safe, but the main lake may still be marginal... be careful!

oh yeah, and i do think those who's reports they are stealing should be compensated! that would be pretty sweet!

The guy that does that weekly report is also a member of this site. I always check the names of new members and I noticed one of them was the author of the Explore section. Although they claim they get info from several sites, a lot comes from BFT and it is word for word. I agree with the others, if they use your info you should be compensated or they should at least ask you before they use the info.

Big shock there. Perhaps they forget what they learned in writing class...give credit where credit is due, otherwise you fail!

[Wink] I also see it each week. If someone has a great day at a local fishing hole and alot of details go into that report, it will make the paper. I guess thats kinda what this whole board is all about.

Sharing fishing info with others so that they can learn and enjoy this great sport.

We have had this lengthy discussion before in past posts. IF you are not into sharing any info about your success with EVERYBODY, Might need to do this in a PM. [unsure] JUST my two bits

[black][size 3]It is call PLAGIARISM - in the dictionary, it means "taking ideas and or words from another source and presenting them as one's own". [/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]In the litterary and publishing real world, it can be considered dishonest and/or basically stealing. [/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]BTW - even changing the words around a little bit can still be viewed as theft of ideas. Whether or not it is officially copyrighted material, it could still be considered as proprietary intellectual property if it has been previously published on the internet and then dishonestly reused with out permission or without reference to the original source.[/size][/black]

XPLORE does list [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com"]www.bigfishtackle.com[/url] as one of their sources of information, at the bottom of the last column. And once posted, it's my understanding that on such a public board it is for use by any who view it.
Certainly plagiarism is most serious when someone basically steals a "work" from another, and makes it their own by way of publication and profit. (I've had this happen to me twice! And they were copyrighted pieces.)
However if you do feel that you've been wronged, you would want to contact Bryce Petersen at the newspaper. Easiest way might be his e-mail: [url "mailto:bpetersen@standard.net"]bpetersen@standard.net[/url]
Hope that helps PACKFAN !!!
I guess that's what happens from such great reports! We appreciate ya!

Hmm..I guess I just don't understand why someone would want to advertise this info on a HUGE scale like that. What are they thinking? Why do they want to see crowds of people dotting that lake?

I agree with what you told me long ago, packfan, PM's are the way to go. You should be compensated somehow. Now everybody and their dog will be up there this weekend and fish all the Koke's out. One of the reasons I liked Porcupine so much is because of low fishing pressure compared to some of these other lakes. But I guess we can only keep a good thing for so long these days.

That's the deal with this site, anyway. Check the "Who's Online" button on occassion. There's more of those silently lurking GUESTS than there's room to list 'em!
PMs are great, no doubt about it. These public forums are a lot of fun and quite interesting. I've learned a lot, I know that.
But the crowds do flock, don't they?

[#505000]I may be the odd man out here, but I don't see how passing on a fishing report you have read or heard (even published by a reporter) would require any sort of compensation. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]If I had an actual work like a story, poetry, speech, ect... that was copied verbatim I think at that point you have plagerism, and would require compenstation. Where to fish and what to use at a location is hardly anyone's intellectual property.[/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]If I post on the forums that "fishing is hot on the south side of Utah Lake, use anchovies" and someone takes and passes that information on in another fishing report even word for word I can see how it would be annoying, but it certainly doesn't rise to plagarism, or require any sort of compensation unless someone is infringing on something you own (AKA Intellectual property). This is especially true when this information was readily avaliable on a forum easily accesable to the general public. [/#505000]

I think this is getting blown out of proportion, I didn't say we needed to get compensated for our info here, I just got a chuckle out of it was all. And I have seen in the past where they get the info from. You people don't really think I tell all do you? I have my own spots and certain tecniques I keep under wraps. I mainly posted the Info on Porcupine to help some people and the younguns try to catch a different type of fish thru the ice. Hope to see some of you up there this weekend. I'm headed up Friday for sure and Sat. is a maybe. Anyway " tight lines " and have a great weekend. And the greatest news of all is NASCAR STARTS THIS WEEKEND. Go"ROUSH RACING"[cool]

Very accurate, CP. I write on occassion for the Outdoors section, and get phone calls weekly about where I've been and what I know from my trips. And while I get paid for columns, I certainly don't for fishing info. Personally I just enjoy being able to help, since I am able to get out pretty regularly.
The "intellectual property" is where I've been stung in the past. While having the good fortune to have articles picked up by AP in the past (for no additional pay, I might add), I've also had stories taken and little more than the author's name changed before being published elsewhere.

[cool]Hey Uinta, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that YOU that writes that article for the Standard Examiner? You do work for them, don't you?

EDIT: Nevermind, just read the answer to my question in the post up above...

Wow, I've never thought of my small contribution to this site as intellectual, LOL. I thought of it more of an exchange of ideas and information to help those less fortunate than us fishaholics. Ever think about how many members may have found out about this site from the very publications mentioned above. I believe that BFT may even benefit from the advertisement and the input of all it's members new and old.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The BFT site benifit from the Standard Exagerator, your kidding right?[crazy]

Thats the point, I am kidding. I was sure that everyone asking for compensation for their fishing information / lies was kidding too.
I would like to think that the free sharing of information and opinions would continue on BFT and through many other outlets.

O4T - I'm not employed by the Standard. However I am a freelance writer, and they generally publish one article a month from me.
