[red]Can you believe it isn't listed in the Utah fishing holes section?! OK, before you turn blue in the face and wet yourself laughing [sly] we spent a week at Bullfrog last year so it's not all that bad. We decided to head to the southern end this spring. It has been many years since I have been that direction and was wondering what you like best. From what I remember the best way from SLC was to cut across after Beaver to Panguitch and then to Kanab, or is there a better way? Which marina is your preference, Stateline or Wahweap? Tell me about hotel accommodations or camping areas you have liked. I'm looking to do my part keeping those Striper populations in check but need to keep the wife and kids happy as well. Any advice would be appreciated. Many Thanx![/red]

My wife and I go to Powell 2 or 3 times a year, sometimes to Bullfrog and sometimes to Wahweap. The best way to Wahweap is like you said, through Panguitch like you're going to Bryce Canyon, and right on down the canyon to Kanab. It's a beautiful drive. We've stayed at the Super 8 in Page and it was pretty reasonable and nice and lots of parking for a big truck/boat rig. Last year, we were there the first few days of March and it was perfect, with beautiful weather, plenty of big fish and absolutely no waiting to launch the boat. Of course weather is very unpredictable this time of year, especially that mean old wind. For Lake Powell fishing, you'll definitely want to keep an eye on the Wayneswords.com fishing forum.

[cool][#0000ff]A lot of Wahweap regulars prefer to take the Hurricane turnoff from I-15 and drive to Fredonia, AZ...and then up to Kanab. Much better driving conditions...especially when there is snow on the high roads. [/#0000ff]

Good point, TD. I'm thinking I'll go that way next time myself, since I'm pulling a much bigger boat now. I was down in St. George this weekend, and I had to restrain my car from turning off at the Hurricane exit to head for Powell. It won't be long now.

if the weather is good the shorts and fast route is to jump of at scipio head to salina get on highway 89 takes ya right to wahweep.drove it last year got of at beaver didnt like that route seemed like it took fo ever to get to panguitch. made the run from roy to beaver in three hrs but it took another two and a half to page. but from what i here it is a five and a halh hour drive.i personaly wouldnt go to hurricane thats five and a half and you still hallf to get to poweelll that sounds like a seven and a half hour trip. cause its one and a half to page easy.

[red]Thanx guys! One of my concerns is I don't pull the hills all that great so long flat nicer roads may actually be a little faster for me. I am definitely tempted to head south at Scipio just for the "ambiance" as well. [/red]

You definitely don't want to take 89 all the way from Salina, that would take forever. You can take I-15 to the Hwy 20 Bryce Canyon exit and it's a short drive over to Panguitch, then take 89 from there. According to Google Maps, it's 344 miles and 5 1/2 hours from Provo to Page going that way. It's 383 miles and 6 hours going down into Arizona. If I were driving a sports car or pulling a smaller boat in good weather, I'd go through Panguitch. That's a very nice drive. With a bigger boat in tow or with nasty weather possible, I'd go with the southern route. There's not much difference in mileage, and the road is pretty curvey in places on 89.

I've been that way several times and it's no problem at all, even with a 19' boat in tow. We're planning on moving to Kanab actually, and we'll be making many trips down there, and this is the way we always go. To me it sounds kind of silly to get off at Beaver, but then I've never been that way.
OK, I just looked at the map and I don't see how you can even get anywhere from Beaver, except Hwy 153 goes to Junction and you won't want to be there if you're heading to Powell. You must be talking about the same route as I am, which is Hwy 20 from I-15 (about 20 miles south of Beaver), to Bear Valley Junction and right on down to Panguitch (about 38 miles from the I-15 exit). Then right on down Long Valley to MT. Carmel Junction and Kanab. No problem. If there's a better way, I definitely want to know about it. And I am going to try the Arizona route on my next trip. we got of at the beaver exit i belive there is a cheveron. it took us five and a half hours total from roy. you are right it comes out just a little north of panqitch. i still think i can make it faster by getting off at scipio. but who knows, long as its not dark so you are hitting deer.

I live in Panguitch, and to straight up, the fastest way is just like bassrods just said, I-15 to exit 95 and over hwy 20 to hwy 89. Then south on 89 to Lake Powell. It is only thirty miles from the interstate to Panguitch and then two hours to Powell. If you went to Hurricane it would be an extra hour on the freeway and then two or three more after you get off the freeway. Hwy 20 across from the freeway to 89 is a great road, three lanes on the uphills and we have hardly any snow so that is not a problem. If you want to avoid that little pass, take the Scipio exit like someone else stated and it will bring you to Richfield and 89 and it is not a huge difference in time. If you are ever going down without a boat, there is a shortcut across the desert east of Bryce Canyon. Taking that road I can get to Lake Powell from Panguitch in just about an hour and a half. As far as marinas, this time of year you don't have to worry about waiting to launch or excessive crowds wherever you go.
