US Open King Mackerel Tournament
#1
The date's have been set for the 2007 US Open King Mackerel Tournament. For those of you that don't know, this is the tournament that the best of the best attend. It's held out of South Port, NC and the dates are Oct 4 - Oct 6th. Here's a link to the site:

The tournament pays out 55 places and largest fish takes home 25 thousand. Of course, the money is in the side pots, but that's still a big chunk of cash. Now is when to start planning for the tournament. I suggest if you haven't fished these water to start looking now. If you're lucky, you might see the back of the "Reel Deal" as she brings home the 25,000 dollar fish. [cool]

I would guess the Reel Deal is your boat? I was going to make an offer but it seems you already have a plan. Maybe I'll just come up ther and show off a bit.[Tongue]

Nothing is set in stone, it's a long ways away. I actually tried to get a crew together of BFT members a couple years ago, one being TubeN2, but it's harder than it sounds. I would be just as content as a Mate aboard your boat as I would be skippering my own.

Besides, if your boat is bigger than mine, it would be a more comfy ride anyhow. LOL The water can get big that time of year on the Carolina coast. [cool]

I'm going to run in a few of the local King Mack tourneys in the spring of the season. There's some good money in the side pots.

You already know i'm doing work on my boat. I'm also in need of a new livewell system. Mine took a dive and with Pogeys on the menu, it's an indespensable tool. That'll be comming soon. I won't be doing that myself, i'll have a proffesional take care of it.

Let me know what your offer is, maybe we can make a week of it.[cool]

The offer is quite simple but there are a lot of variables that need to come into play. I would bring the big boat up by you at my expense. You arrange the slip at your expense. I drive you assemble and run the crew and the gear. My sponsor pays the entry fee. What ever we win we split.

I can stay on the boat so no reservations required.

Or we just go 50/50 all the way but I'm looking at $3000 for fuel to get there and back. If I'm lucky I can plan another tourney on the way to justify the expense. If not it's worth it just for the life experience.

Mmmmm, lets see.

First and foremost, the way I usually do it is the expenses come off the top. Gas, bait, slip, etc..... What ever expenses arrise from the trip come out of the kitty. That would include your bill for truck gas dragging the boat up here.

Next, I would say 2 mates would be plenty, as well as you and I. That would be 4 total to split the winnings with. I can think of two people right now, in the local Murrells Inlet area, that are seasoned professionals. I'm sure they would be game for such a feat. Lets say this for splitting the winnings:

Expenses off the top
What's left split like this"

Captain: 40%
1st mate: 30%
other 2 Mates: 15%

The captains always gets more, and since you'd be playing captain this time, you da man. [cool]

What do you think about that? You can't have but 6 lines in the water, and i'm pretty sure we could float out of murrells inlet. I know murrells inlet very well. I've never fished out of South Port, we'd have to look into it a bit more. Besides, we're just kicking rocks right now anyways.

Oh, just so you know, if we set a new NC state record, it's an additional 10 g's. [Smile]

All of what you say sounds great.

The way I see it I would rely on your knowledge of local waters so you decide the port and fishing destinations. The boat can cruise @50mph if needed. I have 600 mile range on 330 gals. That should give you plenty to think about when time comes.

If we take expenses off the top do we add up expenses and split it 4 ways even. Then payback all expenses from the winnings, what's left gets divided the 40/30/15x2? No matter what we do I'm pretty sure my sponsors will pay the entry so that is zero.

I will bring a pair of rods that were designed just for kings with Torium reels on them. Then what ever you have will round out the gear. Bait will also be your choice as you know the local fishery and what is hot.

Also on the $10K bonus check to see if all team members have to be registered with SKA. Two years ago a team here lost $40K due to an oversight in the rules. They thought just the Capt. had to be registered. It was a tough mistake to swallow but they won $25K one week, week two a new contender boat/motor/trailer and a bonus of a dodge Hemi truck for winning both events. So they didn't cry too much about the $40K for breaking the record.

Also are there any boundaries? they are talking about that down here to keep the fast boats closer to home. From my port I can run around the keys, fish the atlantic and make weigh in all in 8 hours.[sly]

Ok, checked the site, answered my entry questions, I'm ready to fish!!!!!!!!! Keep your fingers crossed that the big boat makes it from Destin to Fort Myers in one piece. I'm expecting delivery in the next 10 days.

I figured the site would answer your questions. There are boundries, as you've just found out. As far as the rules go, you don't have to be affiliated with any organizations to win the 10000 dollar prize for breaking the record.

Your boat is way more fashionable than mine. LOL, but that's to be expected. Though, i've got my eye on a 28 foot key west once the house is payed off.

I've got detailed charts from the bottom of SC up through the middle of NC. Complete with numbers and all. What i'd like to do is get a satalite photo of the coastal waters to see where the temps are merging with reference to structure and depth.

Also, maybe giving a few test runs to get use to fishing together, and to recon the holes. [cool]

So you're waiting the arrival of a new boat?

I work with the federal Gov't on some things (I can say no more, seriously) I guess I could call in a favor for some thermal satellite imagery.

Yes, waiting on the new boat I have a guaranteed delivery before March 15th. I'm pressing for sooner rather than exactly the 15th. I wanted to hit the Kingfish Div 11 in my area but delivery is too close and I would have 1 week to field a team and also learn the systens of the new ride.

You don't need a special favor to get a thermal Satellite photo. I can get satellite photos no problem.

I know silly, I can get them from Roffs or some where like [url "http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/avhrr/sst.html"]http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/avhrr/sst.html[/url]

I just figure the Gov't must have some really cool spy stuff they could play with.[Wink]

LOL, I figured as much, but you never know. I figured I'd try and help you keep your 007 status so you don't blow your cover. OOOOPSS, too late. [Tongue]

Na, alot of anglers don't use thermal photo's to plan thier attack; unless you are a tuna angler. I don't think there is an open water tuna angler that doesn't use those type of photo's. They are an indespencable tool.
