I will be in Orfino the week of the 26th and was wondering how the steelhead fishing might be from the shore? I plan th use 15 lb test ( mabey 17 lb) line with a float and jig setup. This is what I use on the Salmon ( with 12lb line) from Shoup to almost Stanley. I have various other drift gear and some Hot Shot plugs. All I know is that they use weighted floats and bigger jigs like 3/8oz at times. Thanks, Kent

Hiya kent, welcome to BFT, this link may help http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/fish/steelhead/weekly_harv.cfm
Looks like things are slowing up by Orfino, but still a few fish there. We are coming up to Salmon area in about 2 weeks ourselves, Hopefully hit the Middle fork to North Fork area, but if no fish we'll keep chasin em up to Pahsim Hatchery.
I never have used the Jig under bobber method you were using, we always use the bottom drift method with a 3 way swivel and bit o tin tube, then about 3 foot leader and a maribou leech and corkie. You may try the old roe or shrimp baits also. GL to ya.

According to F&G stats Steelhead fishing was very good last week between middle and north forks. I think it was 4 fishing hours per fish.

All I can say to that is "ha!"...they sure weren't taking my group's stats into consideration!

Somebody has to keep the stats down! Too bad it had to be you. It was me a year ago last fall at Salmon. Didn't catch squat. Wellll ... I did catch a squaw fish. Or is that a "Pike Minnow"??
Luckily I hooked a couple last fall at Orifino.

I did not make it to salmon in the last year due to a baby but plan on going this fall.
