Yuba Rainbows
#1
[cool] Took the wife and 4.5 month old Jack to Yuba Saturday afternoon, didn't get there till around 3:30. I'd heard a lot about fishing over by the dam, so we headed straight there. There were a TON of people there by my standards, but for some reason they were all on the north side of the damn, spread out all over the beaches. It seemed like most of them were tossing power bait or similar baits, as they were not moving at all. I headed for the other side of the dam were I had the entire stretch of beach all to ourselves. Surveyed the area first off, and found lots of rainbows cruising the shallows. Rigged up with a sinking rainbow rapala, and tossed a handful of lures in my vest. Turns out the rapala was all I would end up using.
All in all caught about 25 rainbows, anywhere from 14-20 inches. Just worked the bank up and down, never casting in the same spot twice.
If your heading down, they wouldn't take my offering on a straight steady retrieve. But working the lure erradically, I was landing a nice rainbow about every third cast. The water was beautiful and virtually ice free almost across the entire lake.

Didn't end up breaking out the inflatable canoe, as the wife didn't like the idea of little Jack out on the water.
Also would have liked to rig up my fly rod, but there was no room for a back cast where I was fishing.

All in all, it was a great trip, and BEAUTIFUL weather to be out fishing. The other bank tanglers didn't seem to be having any luck. I only saw a copule other fish caught in the two hours we were there.

The wife also landed about 4 or 5 nice rainbows. Wanted to get little Jack in with the fish, so he'll know how to slay em' when he can finally cast on his own!

I had originally planned on finding the pike I heard were down there, but I couldn't locate any good structure or weed lines where they'd be hanging out.
Does anyone know an area on Yuba with maybe some more structure where I could get into some pike?

Trying to follow TubeDudes' lead and take more pics of my excursions. I always love his pics...
Hope you enjoy them!

Well done and great looking fish. I have a hunch that there was something written on your wife's red shirt above "BYU".

I was there today and did about the same . Between me and my daugther the first half hour we landed about 15 bows non stop on lures. I threw out some powerbait and they would not touch it.They are very aggresive this time of year and sitting bait does not look appetizing to them right now. Even when i brought the bait in they followed it and then turned right around. The bows are not nearly as big as they were 2 years ago. There were 2 bows i caught that had bite marks on them. We ended up with over 30 bows caught at least and kept 8 males for smoking and jerky. [Wink] I could not stop getting them to bite even after 12pm and then the wind. Man they were really aggresive today!! [cool] You would have fun catching them on a canoe or a tube .

I was out there that afternoon also. I didn't get out until around 5:00 pm and all the good spots where taken, so needless to say I didn't even get a bite. To answer your question about why every one was on the north beach was because every else must have read the signs that say "No fishing from the dam". From your pictures you look like you was in the spot that the game warden stopped and talked to someone. I would have loved to have been right on the dam but I guess I'm just chicken. I heard several people complain about the guy on the dam catching all the fish.

Yeah,,, funnny how sound travels on water, I could hear them complaining about me too. [Wink]

I wasn't fishing off the dam at all though. I started just south of it on the beach, and worked up and down that beach, not covering more than about 200 feet the entire time. The shore there is just covered in huge rocks, so it's not as comfortable as north of the dam where everyone was camped out in camping chairs fishing with bait.

I did get checked by two different wardens though, but both were really cool guys, and didn't give me any trouble at all...

Pictures don't lie. Look at Jack likes to fish, Just on the other side of the bridge. It just bugs me that the people who follow the rules don't get ahead.

Kent,

My wife spent a summer out in Laie, Hawaii, at BYU-Hawaii, and their colors are red I guess. People always ask her where she got a red BYU shirt, including both wardens who stopped us yesterday at Yuba!

I might not make many friends on this board with this statement, but I am definitely a cougar fan. Especially a cougar football fan.
No low blows please... [Tongue]

You'll make a friend with me -- 'cause I am also a long-time cougar fan and I also graduated from there.

[cool]You'll always have a friend on the board with me, dude. Go Cougs, and nice job on the 'bows. Congrats on the new kid too. I've got a 3 year old girl and 11 month old boy and they are so much fun. Wish I still lived with them though... They'll be coming to visit me soon though and regularly. I'm hoping to even get my 11 month old out fishing at Mantua this summer, but he may be a bit too small still. Might have to leave him back with his mom while I take my daughter out with her dad, unless I have someone with to help watch them both at that age. Good luck on your next trip out...

Alright Kent and Geoff! If you look closely, my little Jack is wearing a shirt with a big "Y" on it! Hey, you gotta start em' young, right?

I'm in school there right now, hoping to graduate next April...

Work on your roll cast and you will never again say there is no room for a back cast.

[cool][#0000ff]Great report and great pictures. And, don't pet the sweaty stuff...or however that goes. People are always jealous of those who are catching fish. You should hear some of the stuff I hear coming across the water (from bank tanglers) when I am out catching fish in my tube.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It is also okay to be a Cougars fan. You just have to be careful about what kind of group you are in when you announce it. Do it in the wrong place and the wrong time and you can be "reddened" up a bit. Great rivalry in this state.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I do have a request, on behalf of the members with dialup connections. Please reduce the size of your pics before attaching them. At one time we had a limit on the size the system would accept...250 KB. That is no longer the case but it would be appreciated if you kept them under 300 KB. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Did you see anybody hook any pike in the dam area?[/#0000ff]

Nice fish man... thats really cool. Thats awesome that you have your kid out there that early. Tube's right.. people will always find something to bust your chops on if you're consistently in fish... accusing you of fishing "out of bounds", using illegal methods and so on. I think that if you were checked by a couple CO's and they had nothing to say, then you'd be just fine. Also, its the bait fishermens fault they weren't catching fish.... if they saw you throwing hardware on the other side of the dam and didn't come join you, then thats on them for not adapting to what the fish wanted that day... you did nothing wrong. By the way.... your wife's shirt was better than your sons.... Just kidding. [cool]

Those are pretty fish Canadian. I still need to take you up on the "tell me where the pike are in Alberta offer" you gave me last summer. By the way, I'm a Cougar fan too. As for fishing in the wrong place, if you were checked by wardens, I can't understand what the problem might be. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

No, I didn't see anyone catch any pike, but no one was targeting them either. I got an entire tackle box full of pike lures alone, and am itching to find a place in Utah were I can put them to use. I'm actually getting really excited to head up to Pineview after hearing all the musky stories up there. Never really gotten into muskies, but I'm hoping my pike skillz[cool] will translate. Anyone know about when is the best time to target them muskies up there? New to the area, and not sure when ice comes off at Pineview. I want to hit em' up when they're in the shallows so I can fish top water baits...

So does anyone know an area of Yuba where I can find some structure, or where you know there are pike? I haven't fished for them since last summer in Canada, and this warm weather is bringing out my pike addiction again...

Any info would be REALLY appreciated!

[cool]Trollboy8, I'd be glad to share some info with ya. Just tell me when and where you're going, and I'd be glad to help.

Was that you whose wife's family were from Mountain View? Some of the best fishing I've ever encountered is in that area.

Like I said, let me know when/where you're going, and I'll hook you up. I get a Big Grin on my face just thinking about that area!

Yes, my wife is from Mountain View. Her dad used to own the gas station and mini-mart there. Now they live (half the year) in Waterton so we make a least one trip a year up there, sometimes more. If you are ever going up there and we happen to be there at the same time, we should coordinate. I can offer free ice cream at the BigScoop in Waterton to entice you to share your secrets. --Jim

Yes, I remember you. I've been stopping at that gas station in Mt. View since as long as I can remember. We also always hit the "BigScoop" in Waterton every summer. It's been a tradition since I was just a little guy.

Right on, there are some hidden gems in that area. Keep me posted on when you're heading up.

Great pictures, and Jack is adorable!

My husband and I might take a drive south to Yuba sometime soon to see if we have any luck ourselves.
