Huntington 3/24/07

Fished Huntington Reservoir today with Koldfeet and Signalfool. Chester and icing_perch were also up there. There is about 5 inches of ice, then about 8 inches of slush and then more ice. Bottom line is that it is about 40 inches from the top of the ice to water. Fortunate for us that it wasn't two inches thicker or we wouldn't have been able to reach water with the power auger. No slush, but that will change one of these days (probably not for a week or so, but who knows). Fishing was non-stop when we first got there and started fishing at about 7:00 AM. That lasted for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours and then it slowed down considerably. Saw fish on the fish finder almost all day, but trying to get them to bite was often a challenge. Except for Chester, he continued catching them almost one right after another most of the day. Beautiful day, nice to meet some new anglers and a great day of fishing.

It was a great day on the ice! Good to see you today Kent and others. Those tigers sure are fun to catch. I had never fished Huntington before, wow what a place. It started to heat up again right after you left. Fish on every drop. I fished till 5:30 and called it a day. Lots of fish, good weather, and good folks. Just doesn't get any better!

Sounds like a great trip Kent. Did you happen to swing by Electric or Schofield?

Sorry, I only took pictures of a couple fish that I caught for the contest. I need to do a better job of getting some scenery shots -- it is truly beautiful up there. Yes, I was able to add 2 points, so I am still 2 points short of taking the lead. I have a hunch that if I was fortunate enough to pass Ron that he would find a way to get out one more time and recapture the lead.

We drove by Cleveland and Electric Lakes just before we left and they are still both there. Great sight seeing Electric Lake so full of water. MAYBE with higher water levels the fish will grow a little larger in there. Didn't make it over past Scofield.

Thanks again Kent, for a great day on the ice. I did take a few pics including one of Kents amazing double technique I will try to attach. I'm new at this, so bear with if I get it wrong.

P.S. Kent, you were absolutely right about those Tigers, DELICIOUS, in fact, the're GRRRRRRRREAT!!!

Yep, I learned that "one rod in the mouth and one rod in the hand technique" from PIKEMAN99 last week at Fish Lake. I've got to practice it better though, because I managed to get the two fish wrapped around each other and lost them both; whereas he managed to land both of his fish. I also learned that rod handles don't taste very good. Yep, I believe the tiger trout that I have eaten were the bast tasting of the trout family. It may a lot to do with catching them out of Huntington (high cold reservoir).

Thanks again for the invite. Went up with my dad from Wyoming and my buddy from across the street and had a great time my first and only trip on the ice this winter. Was doing a lot of mad talking on the way up but had a hard time backing it up this trip. Normally when I go with my dad or fishing buddy I school them. Dave caught the first fish and dad the second one. Both of them had at least 3 on the ice before I got started. Blamed it on the gas on my hands. Took the hand sanitizer and tried it and nothing. Used some Berkley scent still nothing. Finally took 3 or 4 salmon eggs and crushed them and rubbed them into my fingers and then the bite was on. I ended up catching 9, Dave caught 9 and dad caught 5. I got the 2 biggest of the day at 16 and 16.5 inches. I couldn't believe how these fish fought, I have caught 20+ inch rainbows with less fight. We ended up keeping 12 fish 10.5-16.5 inches for the smoker. Had a great time and will definitely have to hit it next winter. Tried pieces of red side minnows, night crawlers, wax worms and spikes. I got all of mine on either moon glow jigs tipped with waxies or fat boys tipped with spikes or waxies. Dad got his on a plain hook with a night crawler or a gitzit tipped with waxies. Dave caught his on a plain hook or a pink moon glow jig tipped with crawler. Had a ton of fish showing up on the finder but only 1 out of about 10 would bite. I picked up 4 in the last 15-20 minutes we were able to fish. Great times had by all.

It was a pleasure meeting you. Regret that we didn't have more time to chat. If you think those tiger trout at Huntington fight hard through the ice you should trying catching them when the water is a little warmer. They are just like the Energizer Bunny.
