Has anyone ever used an Umbrella Rig? I've seen them in the sporting good stores and am rather curious as to how effective they are. They really look good but so do a lot of todays baits, lures, jigs etc. Do they really work or are they another piece of fishermans eye candy...

Wiperslayer has used one several times at Willard with no luck, not even a bite. He did not rig it like the picture that OC posted, he had a single lure in the center but that picture looks good too. I think they are more for crappie but they sure look good in the water.

[#002850]Wiperhunter2, question: When Wiperslayer was using his umbrella at Willard, how did it trail in the water? Did it run fairly true? How deep did it go? Any tangeling up?[/#002850]

I don't have a proclamation handy, but you might want to check it out. I'm not sure that it allows that many hooks on one rod.

I know that they use them in other states, but they may not be legal here.

[#002850]Two lures are allowed. I guess that a guy could just use the one long center one with a hook and all the others as hookless attractors.[/#002850]

That's an excellent point Saber. Like coot said, you would have to rig two with hooks and have the others as attractors, you could also run the spinner blade style. I'm still not sure they would be worth using in our local waters though. But I guess anything is possible.

I could see them knocking the heck outta the stripers at Powell, and maybe the wipers at willard, but other than that I can't think of anywhere else in Utah.

It ran true but was similar to pulling those big cow bells, a lot of drag. No problem tangeling up but he did not have the lures behind each arm of the umbrella. His had a spinning blade behind each arm, I guess to attract the fish, a single lure in the middle. Not sure how deep it ran but I'd guess 7 to 10 ft.
