Where do you put RODHOLDERS!!!???
#1
...I already know that I'm OCD as well as AnalRetentive, but I spent 2 hours last night in the garage trying to figure out where to mount my rodholders in my family boat.

I've got the new scotty round flush mounts, access to some old scotty flush mounts, as well as some scotty side/top mounts. Do you generally like to mount them inside on the sides of the upholstery or on the gunnels (flush). Kindof wish I could duct tape them on, go out and try them, then decide if I like them permananently or not.

Will be trolling and want 4 mounts.

Fishing boat is no problem, as I don't have problems drillilng holes in it...but every time I drill a hole in my nice family boat I have to close my eyes.

Somebody on a recent thread mentioned that the ones mounted inboard on the upholstery were in the way?

(I know, this is a stupid post).

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

I have six in my boat but mine is a open bow. Two flush mounts in the aft end of the bow, one on each side. Two more flush mounts along the side toward the back end but before the forward transom.(the forward transom I'm talking about is the area between the main transom in the back. This is where my battery and fuel tank goes.) Then two side mounts on the forward transom that mainly go straight back. I always put the pole holder in the mount then place it in the area where I'm thinking about installing it. I usually angle my poles out on the side, so you need to make sure the butt of the rod has clearance so you can swing it from side to side. Hope this helps. WH2

My biggest pet peeve is drilling holes in my boat. I had the same situation when I wanted to mount my rod holders. Attached was my solution.

By installing a rail I accomplished three objectives 1) Min. amount of holes drilled. 2) rod holders can be moved if placement is wrong. 3) add a nice hand rail that really added to the boat.

You could also clamp a 2x4 to the sides of the boat and add the mounts to the plank. This temporary fix will let you move the mounts arount until you find the right places for them.
A friend of mine puts hid down riggers on a board that he clamps across the boat from left side to right side.
He only sets it up when he is using the downriggers.

Thanks for the ideas! I drilled 22 holes (1 big, 2 littles for the round surface mount Scotties (each) x2) 1 big and 3 littles for the 15 degree gunnel mounts (each) x2 and 4 little's each for the side mount Scotties (each) x2) on my boat Saturday evening and mounted 6 rod holders! I'll take photos when I'm at Powell this week and post them up along with the most excellent fishing report that I'm hoping to post...

I measured 4 times before each hole, and closed my eyes during the actual drilling thereof. That way it didn't hurt quite as bad!
