As consumers we have a choice. We can choose a future of farmed salmon raised in pens with all of their attendant ecological problems. Or, if enough of us work together to demand the things that wild salmon require such as healthy habitat, clean water, and free-flowing rivers, we can choose a future that includes robust populations of wild salmon and steelhead once again thriving throughout their Pacific range.
Signing your name to the Salmon Consumer’s Bill of Rights does two things:
1) Adds your name to the community of consumers who care about wild salmon and steelhead whether as healthy good food, an irreplaceable part of our angling traditions, or simply as a legacy we must protect and restore. TU will work with business and industry to gain footholds for specific conservation measures by using the numbers of consumers endorsing the Bill of Rights.

2) Qualifies you to receive monthly wild Pacific salmon and steelhead conservation email updates, specific action alerts, recipes, salmon-wise consumer tips , and updates on participating businesses, restaurants and industries.
Trout Unlimited’s vision is that by the next generation, robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive within their North American range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters.
What does this vision mean when applied to recovering wild Pacific salmon and steelhead? TU chapters are collaborating with partners from southern California to Bristol Bay, Alaska to help protect some of the best remaining salmon and steelhead habitat throughout their Pacific range. We are working in concert with state and federal agencies, commercial fisherman, tribes and others to improve passage conditions for migrating salmon on rivers such as the Klamath and Snake, and to maintain legal protections for depleted stocks. And we are working with scientists to make hatcheries and their operations more protective of wild fish.
The problem is that we could succeed in all of these efforts while continuing to see local extinctions and broad declines in salmon and steelhead. What if we could change that dynamic by engaging the buying and selling power of salmon consumers and retailers into our efforts to recover wild salmon?
Harnessing the political and economic power of people who buy and sell salmon defines TU’s new wild salmon campaign. The foundation for this effort is the Salmon Consumer’s Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. It is composed of the 10 conservation ingredients that will allow us to realize our right to enjoy wild Pacific salmon and steelhead – be it chasing one with a rod and reel, sharing one for dinner, or just knowing they are out there. We’re asking consumers who care about wild salmon and steelhead to sign their name to the Bill of Rights and accept the responsibility of supporting businesses and industries that take actions to support our goal.
