MESA PAIR WINS ROOSEVELT ALLSTAR BASS TEAM TOURNAMENT

Mesa, AZ -- The Mesa team of Ken Howden and Gary Understiller weighed a six-bass limit totaling 11.85 pounds including a 4.95-pounder to win the Roosevelt IV AllStar Bass Team Tournament held on Saturday, May 5, at Roosevelt Lake. They shared a total of $3,013 and received the First Place trophies.

They fished swimbaits on flats in the Salt River arm and mainlake areas. The team is sponsored by Holiday Mobile Marine and Burdette Cabinets.

Second place went to another Mesa team. Mark Kliner and Ty Cobb weighed three bass totaling 11.74 pounds including the event's Big Fish - a 7.01-pounder that fell for a buzzbait. They pocketed a total of $2,816. They fished buzzbaits and crankbaits in Salome Cove.

The East Valley team of Thomas Edwards of Queen Creek and Jason Anderson of Gilbert took third place with a limit weighing 11.16 pounds and received $600. They fished a variety of topwater lures on shallow points down to 7 feet.

Fourth place went to the West Valley team of Gary Reddin of Goodyear and Tom Brown of Litchfield Park for a limit weighing 10.64 pounds including a 6.79-pounder. They collected a total of $1,100. They fished spinnerbaits and drop-shot rigs on rip-rap and points in the Porter Springs and Eucalyptus Cove areas. The team is sponsored by Iron Woods Homes and J.D. Steel.

The Phoenix team of Gary Senft and Brian Daniels took fifth place and $1,000 for a limit weighing 10.50 pounds. Senft, who fished alone, used topwater lures and Texas-rigged, Carolina-rigged and drop-shot-rigged worms in the Salt River arm. The team is sponsored by Nitro Boats, Mercury Outboards, Tracker Marine Boating Center, Bass Pro Shops, The Tackle Box, Highway 188 Tackle, Phoenix Fishing Supply, Champion Boats, Tempe Marine, Lobina Lures, Yamamoto Custom Baits, Kinami Baits, and Daniels & Daniels Dentistry.

Rounding out the top ten teams were Pat McCarville and Tony Adolf, both of Phoenix, with 10.08 pounds worth $500; Ken Bryant, Surprise, and Karl Harris, Payson, 10.04 pounds, $1,200; Andy Shelton, Tonto Basin, and Rod Nelson, Buckeye, 9.62 pounds, $495; Sam Hyatt, Phoenix, and Mike Owsley, Happy Jack, 9.38 pounds, $190; and Ray Dougherty, Litchfield Park, and Mike White, Tempe, 9.11 pounds, $185. Twenty-five teams received cash and merchandise prizes.
