Here is another knot one can use to attach your fly to the tippet. I found that the tippet will break before the knot gives way.

The Davey Knot is a simple knot to tie. Here is a video showing one way to tie the knot

I have tested the Davey knot and found it to be about the same as a clinch knot. The clinch knot I have tested to be weaker than any other knot I have tested. Having said that I still use the clinch knot because in practical terms it is adequate most of the time and also is easy to tie. My testing was with 5x and 4x tippets with size 18 hooks.

Other people have reported being satisfied with the Davey knot for fishing for steel head.

I usually use the Orvis Knot or the nonslip monoloop knots for attaching flies. Both of which I have found through my own testing to be a couple of the strongest knots.

Unlike Dryrod, during testing I find the knot generally breaks before the tippet does. Including the Davey knot. One set of testing I did I found the tippet to mostly break but it seemed to be breaking pre-maturely so I bought a new spool of tippet and then the tippet started breaking at the knot.

If you do not have great concern about a knot breaking you most likely will be happy with the Davey Knot because it is not really going to break very often. If you want to insure that you have one of the strongest knots then there are many other knots out there that are stronger but they are not as simple to tie.

Best thing to do is do your own testing instead of depending other peoples views on a forum or a magazine. I have found my ability to tie a knot may not be the same as someone else. Also the tippets and hooks I use may not be consistant with what someone else did for testing. Generally you don't know what someone else used for testing.

This is the knot invented by Davy Wotton, a welsh guy, I've seen one of his videos, this guy is amazing, I highly reccomend renting his vids, this knot is genius and simple.

This is most sound advice, Scruff_Fly!

Like picking a cartridge/load for hunting or a shotgun or rod for fishing... you're the one using it in your own personal situation with your tendancies and preferences so make your own analysis. Just because someone says something is 'good' doesn't always translate into 'good for YOU'.
