Tubin' Yuba 7-16-07
#1
[cool][size 2][blue]Wanted to see what all the yammerin' was about...the walleyes and northerns at Yuba. Hit the road with "road" and Fishboy2 at O dark thirty. Met up with LloydE at the Painted Rocks launch ramp about 6:30. A four way mini floatilla...three tubes and LloydE in his toon.

Water temp 71 at launch...and bumpy, from the south breeze. I assured everybody that it was supposed to be calm, and that the breeze would die down soon and the lake would be calm. Soon was about noon. We bounced and kicked against the wind all morning.

Road, FB2 and Lloyd all followed the breeze and went north from the ramp. I kicked south, to try to find some eyes on the flats. I had pointed out some likely structure to road, who wanted to get a northern and to help FB2 score one too.

I found nothing but perch to the south. And some small carp (toothless golden walleyes). They were really plentiful and aggressive today. We all caught enough to be fun and almost enough to be annoying. No walleyes or northerns for me.

Marty (road) announced on the walkie talkie that he had lost a good northern at the tube. Yeah, right, Marty. Good fish story. Shortly thereafter, he announced that he had a 34 inch northern in his basket. Yee hawwww. Not long after that he wailed that the fish had done a Houdini and escaped out the bottom of the basket. No camera, no pics. Yeah, right Marty.

Fishboy2 had a leaky craft. Attempts to refill it and repair it were not successful. He became a bank tangler. He probably caught more fish than any of us. Dangling a small jig with a bit of worm, below a bobber, he had almost constant action from the numerous small carp and plentiful perch. He also caught a nice little rainbow from shore.

There were dark clouds most of the morning and at one point we got a few raindrops. Not too long after that the constant breeze did finally die down and we all enjoyed being able to work our jigs more creatively. But, we still could catch nothing more than perch and carp. I did manage to bring in one nickle bright rainbow..

Well, no walleyes and no northerns to pose for pictures, but a fun day was had by all.

[cool][#0000ff]"Piddle paddle gang"? Makes us sound like a bunch of incontinent ping pong players.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]But, yes, we did have a good time. Nary a boil in sight though.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I'll tell ya, the first 2 or 3 (or 10) I caught all hit hard and fought well. I was hoping WALLEYE on every one. No matter that they don't win any beauty contests and they can't compete with wallies on the table...those ugly little buggers are much fun on light tackle. As we were getting ready to leave, LloydE readily admitted that catching those small carp was the highlight of the day...since his beloved walleyes were not cooperating.[/#0000ff]

I been fooled many a times myself. Last time I was at Pineview I had a carp take a jig and runn hard to deep water. Thought HUGE smallie or good tiger for sure. Nope [Sad]

[cool][#0000ff]Y'know, I was thinking several times during the day that if a fly flinger wanted to have a lot of fun they could work those carp all along the shoreline...in less than about 6 feet of water. FB2 was catching the heck out of them on a little jig about 4 feet under a bobber. Caught a lot of perch and a nice rainbow too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The carp in Yuba and Pineview have always been eager to hit artificials. Willard at times too. When the water is reasonably clear, carp become aggressive sight feeders. They have good vision and will readily munch minnows as well as all kinds of invertebrates. Several of the carp I caught in Yuba took the plastic jigs down deep...not just in the lips.[/#0000ff]

I think your chartreuse crappie fly got a couple nice carp, eh?

That would be a blast! I have caught 1 or 2 on a flyrod, but never targeted them.
