[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe and I met up with jbnsigma at the PWC ramp at Jordanelle this morning. We were all there about 5:45 and it was still very dark. Air temp about 50 and water temp 68.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Big chubs were boiling on the surface, just off the docks as we launched. J caught a 12 incher on his first cast. TubeBabe caught several throughout the morning. Somehow I managed to avoid the chubs today. I had to muddle through with trout, smallies and perch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I thought all the surface action was caused by chubs. Wrong. There were some decent rainbows surfacing too. I had one smack a small jig just as it was getting light. Got a couple more later while vertical jigging for perch. Also saw a couple of bank tanglers score some small planters close to shore, under a bobber. Using power putty I think.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The dinky perchies were far too numerous today. Hard to get through them to larger perch. I lost several nice "basket fish" and TubeBabe managed to put a few in her basket. I think J ended up with a couple of keepers too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I tied on larger jigs to try to keep away from the perchettes. It didn't work entirely. I still got a grundle and lost a lot of worms and perch meat to the bait stealers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But...the smallies kept me very busy today, so I did not really mind the lack of larger perch. I was using some new PBJ's (painted body jigs) in fire tiger and in pale perch patterns. Also dunked some new colors of plastic tubes. The smallies voted for them with gusto. I easily caught 25 - 30 smallies. Over half were over 13"...with a couple of 15's and 16's...and one powerhouse reel stripper that went 18 1/2 inches. Just too much fun on light tackle. Many of those under 13" were fat 11" - 12" fish that bent my stick and stretched my string.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Only light breezes all morning. Surprising number of PWCs on the water. Guess all the kids are getting a last fling before school starts. But, since all the good fishing was inside the buoys, we were not bothered by the power squadron.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The highlight of my day was having a HUGE smallie follow up one of my small perch and then smack it just under the surface. Being a law abiding angler, who refuses to use live bait, I jerked the mugged perchie away before the big mean ol bass could slurp it. Yeah, right. Good thing I was fishing without waders. It woulda been a bit damp inside waders after seeing that big ol fishie.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Probably one of my better days for smallie tubin'...especially considerin' that I was targeting perch instead of the other guys. Now, if I had been dropshotting for smallies, I probably couldn't have kept the perch away. Hm-m-m-m-m-m.[/#0000ff]

Sound like you guys had a good time.
I think I am going to go up Saturday morning to try my luck and play again with my fish finder that jbnsigma was kind enough to help me get setup.
Its funny, last summer we took my Dad's boat to Jordanelle to fish for small mouth for the first time; and all we could catch were perch. Last Saturday I took my daughter out in our tubes to fish for perch and all we could catch were small mouth and chubs.
If end up going this Saturday, I am going to try my hardest to catch chubs and see what happens.

It looks like today's triad had great fishing fun at Jordanelle! I wish I had been there! I always enjoy your fishing reports and pictures. From the pictures you posted today I noticed some familiar lures that the fish at Starvation, Deer Creek, and Utah Lake can't resist. I am sure that they would work almost anywhere, but I can say firsthand that they worked extemely well at the above mentioned waters. I also noticed a few different lures that I haven't seen you use recently. Your encylclopedic mind seems adjust to all different fishing situations. It is fascinating just to watch you at work -- even though fishing is certainly not work as far as I'm concerned. Keep me informed regarding your next fishing expedition. I will try to join the group.

No doubt, I just love checking out Pat's photos. It's the next best thing to being out there! We gotta get out there with him again, Lloyd so I can finally meet ya.
Beautiful pics like always!

[cool][#0000ff]Yes, I make just about everything I use. I DO buy a lot of plastic...tubes, twisters and shad bodies. But, I custom color a lot of the plastics too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We will be having some "jig making parties" soon, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of pouring and painting their own jigs and making other lures too.[/#0000ff]

I will let you know. I am already in discussions with Wasatch801 to fish with him. But all that will be finalized tonight and I will let you know.

Ooo, Oooo, Oooo count me in I would love to see this process from start to finish. I have seen the tackletorium before and it is just aww-inspiring. I honestly think TD has more tackle than the main warehouse does for either Sportsman's or Cabela's. And we know that TD's gear seams to have a better track record of catching more fish, and less fisherman.

As usual, great report! Took my kids to the Rock Cliff area and all we could catch were perch, no smallies to be found. I guess they were all on the other side. Doggonefishin was also there and no smallies for him either, just perch.

[cool][#0000ff]I think both the larger perch and the smallmouth are now keying in on 2 year size perch...the 4 inchers. There are hordes of them in the shallows at the PWC area and the bigger fish seem to be feeding heavily on them. Several of the perch we kept had the larger young inside them. And, we had follows from smallmouths on several of the small perch we brought up. That has been common in years past about this time too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I found several pockets of smallmouth near weed beds in about 20 feet of water. If I stayed over them, I got bit as soon as I dropped to the bottom. I had several sessions of several fish in a row.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Those silly fish definitely move around and change patterns.[/#0000ff]

Some of those look vageuly familar, like the old "perch urchin". Did you finally get a mold for those or are you still customizing with a hammer.

Pat, my friend, that "heavy metal" box of yours is the bees knees, if you know what I mean. I would love to have a similar stash of painted lead goodies to entice Deer Creek, Lake X, and Starvation fishies to bite. You are definitely a master craftsman.
Since I don't have the jig makings to create a treasure trove for myself, would you at least let me know what sizes have been working well for you? I'm thinking 1/32 oz. might be a little on the light side? Would most of those fall into the 1/16- or 1/8-oz. category? Hope you don't mind me picking your knowledgeable brain.
Thanks in advance for your help (if I haven't asked for too much).

[cool][#0000ff]Would you believe I still have some of the old "first generation" perch urchins? And, I also still have several pounds of the elongated sinkers I bought at Smith & Eddies from their closeout table.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]HOWSOMEVER...I have gradiated to making them from a "casting spoon" mold...mostly in 1/4 oz and 3/8 oz. sizes. See attached pics for some of the color combos. I also make them in the pale perch and fire tiger. Killers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You will no doubt find humor in a post we had a while back. I had "downloaded" some of my old hammered sinker jigs to one of the other moderators. He was using them to good effect at Strawberry. One of his less successful fishing buddies posted a report in which he referred to the lead jigs as "wheel weights".[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I seldom drop anything lighter than 1/8 oz. anymore, when vertical jigging for perch or other critters in the aforementioned waters. My favorite casting spoon and "plunger" lures are 1/4 oz. size. They get down fast and are large enough to entice larger fish without spooking them. Heck, they don't even spook the little ones. I regularly hook perch hardly larger than the lures.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]These are all part of my BDS...Bait Deliverty System. Most of that kind of fishing is merely sending down a piece of worm or perch meat on something that helps attract the fish. Lots of guys use nothing more than a jig head...plain or painted. And, they usually work. However, some of the fancy schmancy colors I have developed seem to increase the odds a bit.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I still owe you a hat, for winning one of the contests. If you wanna make it up here some time, I can give you a show and tell tour and arm wrestle you for a few samples. In most cases, if you will buy the hooks and/or the wire molds for the casting spoons, I will be happy to pour them for you. I have more lead than I will ever use plus several sources of free lead if I should ever need more. Hooks and hardware are the only real costs I have in the jigs. Heck, my time ain't worth much.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We are also planning some jig parties in late September or early October. I know we will be having one in Ogden area and probably at my place in Salt Lake. If anybody in Utah County has some room for a few folks to gather, I would be happy to travel south with my sideshow and demo basic jig making.[/#0000ff]
