DOW WANTS TO HEAR FROM DEER HUNTERS
#1
The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) wants to hear from people who hunt deer in Game Management Units (GMUs) 49, 57, 58, 59, 581, 591 511, and 512.

Public meetings are planned Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the DOW office in Salida at 7405 Highway 50; and Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Victor Community Building on the corner of Portland and Second St. in Victor.

Under current regulations, a hunter who buys a rifle deer license for GMU 49 can also hunt in 57, 58, 59, 581, and 591. The DOW is considering a proposal to remove 59 and 591 from that group. Hunters are encouraged to attend one of the public meetings to discuss the pros and cons of re-grouping these GMUs.

Other deer management issues to be discussed include herd population objectives, buck to doe ratios, and how deer hunting license quotas are set.

Hunters who cannot attend one of the public meetings can send comments to: DOW biologist Jack Vayhinger at 7405 Hwy 50, Salida, CO 81201.

These changes will not affect hunting in 2007. If adopted, they will go into effect in 2008.

Additional Information: The Colorado Division of Wildlife is the state agency responsible for managing wildlife and wildlife habitat, as well as providing wildlife related recreation and maintaining a balance between human activities and wildlife. The Division of Wildlife's funding comes from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. The Division does not receive tax dollars from the state's general fund.
