The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is updating the management plan for Sakatah Lake State Park and is seeking public input as part of the planning process. People who would like to be involved in the year-long planning process are invited to attend the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the park's former interpretive center.
DNR staff and the committee will be discussing how interpretive programs and environmental education opportunities can be developed to meet the park's goal of protecting, restoring and interpreting the natural, cultural and recreational resources for park users.
Discussion will include how interpretive and environmental education programs can provide park visitors with a variety of activities, services, exhibits and materials that also could used for school field trips, family campfire programs, nature hikes and illustrated talks. By integrating natural and cultural history with outdoor experiences, interpretive programs can help park visitors of all ages develop a better understanding of park resources and a greater sense of stewardship for the environment.
During the course of the planning process, the CAC will provide input on the development of goals, objectives and actions regarding natural and cultural resource management, interpretive services, recreation opportunities and potential boundary adjustments at the park.
The committee already has met once to provide DNR staff with perspectives and feedback on natural and cultural resources management. Those unable to attend the first meeting are welcome to attend future meetings. The next CAC meetings will be on Tuesday, Oct. 30 and Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the park's former interpretive center.
People interested in becoming members of the committee should contact the park at (507) 362-4438. Other questions or recommendations should be directed to: Colin Kelly, park planner, DNR Division of Parks & Recreation, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55105-4039. Telephone: (651) 259-5606.
