- Have you heard of "Nature Deficit Disorder"? It's not a medical diagnosis, but a widespread disconnect between generations of young people and the outdoors, with potentially dire consequences for our society and the natural world. Learn about a national movement dedicated to encouraging experiences in nature that improve the health and well-being of children and families with two upcoming events.
The Sierra Club and the national Children and Nature Network are coming together with the newly formed New Hampshire Children In Nature Initiative to co-sponsor the New Hampshire Leave No Child Inside Forum: A Community Conversation about Connecting Children and Nature, Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. The day-long forum begins with a free public session from 9:30 a.m. to noon, featuring a talk by author Richard Louv, who coined the term "Nature Deficit Disorder" in his breakaway book, Last Child in the Woods. Louv will be followed by a panel discussion with special guests representing the environment, education, health, recreation, the built environment and culture.
Before the event, get up to speed on the issue of children in nature by listening to Richard Louv on the NH Public Radio program "The Exchange" with Laura Knoy, Monday, October 22 at 9:00 am. Louv will talk about reconnecting children and nature, as well as the New Hampshire Children and Nature Initiative and the November 27 forum. The public is invited to listen in to NHPR, on the radio or streamed live at http://www.nhpr.org, to hear more about Louv's research and what's being done in New Hampshire and elsewhere to promote stronger connections among children, communities and the natural world.
N.H. First Lady, Dr. Susan Lynch, is Honorary Chairperson for the Leave No Child Inside Forum on November 27. "New Hampshire is taking a leading role in this nationwide effort to make a difference in the lives of children, families and communities by reconnecting them with nature," she said. "From my own work with child health issues, I know how important it is for children and their families to get outside, get moving and learn about the natural world, to lay a foundation for healthy, active lives."
