B-Fast’s HACKER bent a valve push rod leaving the dock. Fortunately, we were able to get a replacement vessel for Jim’s group in short order. Based on the plethora of positive comments posted on ctfisherman.com after the trip, I know the CT fisherman were very pleased with our efforts on their behalf, resulting in a good day on the water, in what typically would have been a busted trip.

By mid-morning, Capt. Tom and Scott found a good pile of cod grubbing on the bottom in about 180 ft. of water east of the bank. Capt. Tom found that jigs and teaser rigs, baited with skimmer clams worked best. Evidently, the cod were attracted to the jigs then ate the bait. This technique out-fished the bait rigs. Mostly medium cod between 8 and 15 pounds came over the rails. Mike’s group limited out by mid-day with very few throwbacks. The group on the DECISIVE had similar results, ending the day with close to their limit of medium cod. Boat three, even with a late start, finished up with a decent catch including a few wolfish. None of the larger cod, taken the previous week further to the north, were in this charge of fish.

Thursday’s trip was quite a different day. An easterly roll had already started as a warning of what was due to come for the weekend. Nevertheless, Tom Jasinski’s group of Ronkonkoma, NY worked hard over the same bottom we fished the day before. What a difference a day makes. Easterly wind, building sea and very few keeper cod. Although, the group was into fish all day and at every drop, keepers were few and far between. Throwbacks out numbered the keepers ten to one. One keeper haddock added to the catch.
