whip finishing tool vs half hitch tool..
#1
... another question from your favorit novice tyer... [Smile]

do the whip finishing tool and the half hitch serve the same function and that is to tie off the thread to finish the fly???

.. if they dont serve the same function what are each tools specific function..

and lastly is it a good idea to have and learn how to use each tool ??????

[cool][#005028]Yes they serve the same function. As I see it if you do three turns with a whip tool there is only one ½ hitch holding the thread. Whereas with the ½ tool you would have the equivalent of 3 ½ hitches with the same number of turns.[/#005028]

[#005028][cool]I find both to be easy to tie. If I'm making a big head I will use the whipping tool other wise 3 or 4 ½ hitches will work for me. Many times I will take one ½ hitch when I want to prevent unraveling as I perform other tying tasks.[/#005028]

... that was the other side of my question.. thinking of a situation where you need to tie off the thread.. or to keep the thread tight while you are doing something else with the fly.. so sounds like it would be a good tool to have as well as the whip finishing tool... ??

[cool][#005028]Hey Mac perhaps you know that the holes located at the end on the end of some of your tying tools are meant for tying a ½ hitch.[/#005028]

...actually I did check a bit on line after I asked and it stated that some tools (bodkin for one) do have holes to use to make 1/2 hitches.. soooooooo I checked my tools and they were not set up that way.. so may just have to buy one to try it out...but I am still curious about it.....

[#005028][cool]I have a set of Dr. Slick tying tools. Both the bodkin & threader have a hole in the back end of the tool.[/#005028]

[font "Tempus Sans ITC"][#bf0000][size 4]Halloween update.. found a bodkin at sport chalet last night that doubles as a half hitch tool.. not surprisingly it did not come with directions.. so that is my search for today.. [Smile][/size][/#bf0000][/font]
