Crayfish crawdads and Yabbies
#1
hey all. Hoping a few of you might respond to a post. trying to get some interesting discussions going here, but so far, no takers.

Anyway, with the advent of warmer water temperatures, our favorite crustacean has shed his shell. The crayfish, crawdad or yabbie, however you want to call him, is a perennial favorite for gamefish throughout the country.
Especially now that he is in a softshell phase.

Any secret crayfish techniques out there any of you would care to share? how about just a favorite rigging method? Do you leave pinchers on or take them off? Hook em in the tail or lightly between the ridge of the eyes?

let's hear from you!

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Nielsen

Greetings Darryl.

I have heard that either cat or dog food is pretty good for baiting crayfish although I will be the first to amit that I have no experience "baiting them" with either one of your choices. However, I have used dead fish like minnows or other fishing bait and had some pretty good results.

Most of the time however, I usually opt to go get the crayfish by hand with a long handled minnow net at night with a head flashlight. i usually target sandy areas immediately next to the rockiest areas I can find. The crayfish come out of the rocks and scatter across the flats looking for food and are pretty easy to catch .

One note of caution though, be sure you are very familiar with an area if you try this alternate method. nothing like hitting a deep hole in the water at night to scare the bejeebers out of you.

As crayfish seem to be scavengers so to speak, I think your choices of dog or cat food would be ok. If they don't work, try the dead fish bait or even old leftover meat. let me know how this works for you. I am pretty interested in hearing your results. In the mean time, I willbe asking around to see if there are any other options available to you.

Thanks

Daniel C. Nielsen

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Thanks for the info on the website. Dads are getting a bit scarce now, but as soon as the really cold weather hits us in the next few weeks, the fish will switch to minnies. Thanks a bunch.

keep those lines wet

Daniel C. Nielsen
http://www.nebraskafishing.com/index.html
