Here is my first attempt at building a Slammer style tipup.. "used for salmon and walleye in the great lakes"

[] I BUILT SOMETHING SIMMALLER. BUT MINE I CAN USE ON ICE BANK AND IN THE BOAT TROLLING. IT SETS THE HOOK FOR YA AS WELL.

when fishing walleye having the hook set at the moment of the strike is ecential, un like pike walleye grab the whole bait but like a pike they have hard mouths so tention is required to keep them hooked...

the original configuration of this Slamer style tipup is much smaller, but then again the rod being used is smaller as well, I have a 4 foot rod here with 110 yards of 6 pound silver thread...

of corse for eyes you should go to 14 pound test lead or steel leader to keep the line from getting cut, but for trout it should be just right....

playing with it the rod looks like it will remain over the hole once a fish has taken hold, a bad set will throw the rod backwards....

I am looking forward testing it out, but it looks like we wont see ice for another two weeks at best...

look at the photo at it highest image size by clicking on the photo, when the page opens, click on it again...

one of the photos shows the catch at the top, I used a fillips flat head wood screw. I ground three sides off leaving one side with a beveled hook,

at the bottom of the bar the hook screw is mounted, is a [ul] [li]hinge I pulled out of my scrap hardwear box. [/li] [li]white brass rung from a boat but you can use an eye screw. the cord is a bungy cord tied with zip ties. I tied a knot on one end, but found it was not nessisary, the zip ties seems to be doing the job... on the other end is tied to an aluminum fence tie I used for a locking pin to lock the cross member in the crossed possision.. I can pull it when I want to fold it to put in a sock I am going to make for it out of a pant leg..[/li][/ul] [center][/center] [left]
You first need to know the assembly to understand the fireing mec...

when the fish strikes, it tugs the rod end down a nudge, the bevel on the catch pin allows the rod to kick forward then up setting the hook, at the same time the catch pin arm slams in to the base clearing it away from the action,

How do you set the jigs depth on these without having them release in your face?

with the rod in the holder, I open the bail of my reel and let the line out, I come a foot short of my desired depth, then bend the rod over and set the catch..... then my depth is set.....

if I go to deap, I can reel in some with out the set going off, it takes a downword pull to set off my rig...
