Damn they want more dams
#1
[shocked][#005028]Friends of the River has learned that agribusiness and developers are pressuring Senator Dianne Feinstein to endorse a $12 billion mega-water bond initiative for the November ballot. And she may decide this week! [/#005028][#005028]Send an email now [/#005028][#005028]urging her to resist the pressure.[/#005028]
[#005028]This is an expanded version of the bad proposal that Senator Don Perata and other California Legislators refused to support in late 2007. Senator Perata’s leadership has helped stave off this horrible initiative so far. [/#005028]
[#005028]Now these same interests are looking for support elsewhere, they are requesting an endorsement from Senator Feinstein. [/#005028]
[#005028]The proposed initiative includes billions for damaging dams on the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, and increased fresh water exports from California’s dying delta. [/#005028]
[#005028]State and federal studies have not yet demonstrated that these dams would have any public benefit. The initiative even includes special provisions that would strip the Legislature of their normal review and approval authority for these dams and put it in the hands of a committee of corporate farmers and developers hand-picked by Governor Schwarzenegger. [/#005028]
[#005028]Senator Feinstein may decide whether or not to support this divisive effort THIS WEEK. Please [/#005028][#005028]email [/#005028][#005028]or call today and urge Senator Feinstein to reject a water bond initiative that contains billions for new dams. [/#005028]
[#005028]California is in a fiscal crisis. The proposed water bond would obligate the public to borrow and pay billions of dollars to build dam projects that provide benefits for only a few special interests. Taxpayer funds must not be wasted on subsidizing environmentally destructive projects.[/#005028]
[#005028]Ask Senator Feinstein to support the on-going efforts of business, labor and environmental justice groups to create sustainable solutions to California’s water problems that protect our economy and our environment. [/#005028]
[#005028]Please call her office today at (202) 224-3841 or send an email now! [/#005028]
