Need opinions......on Rem. 870 Super Mag
#1
I'm looking at buying a Remington 870 12 gauge Super Mag Waterfowl Camo (new gun for 2008). So does anyone else shoot the 870 Super Mag? If so what's your opinion? What about another brand of super mag 3.5" 12g (Mossberg 835 or Bennelli Nova?) Does this mean I only want to shoot 3.5" shells? No way, too expensive, but I want to know I have that option when goosing next fall. I've been shooting a 3" Browning Auto5 12 guage with a 32" barrel and it has done well, but its just too nice of a gun to beat up in the marsh anymore. The new 870 has a camo stock, camo finish barrel, etc. You can see it on Remington's website at 870 link. By the way, I can get the gun for $466 locally. Can anyone quote me a better price on this gun? Please don't tell me to call anywhere, I just want a price from someone on the site who may work somewhere that deals with Remington's. Thanks

I have heard good and bad but mostly good. I have had 2 benelli novas and can't say enough good about them. You should splurge and buy one of these.[Tongue]

I would not buy a Remington shotgun to save my life. They are the biggest turds I have ever shot or owned. Buy a Nova or BPS.
Problems I had... Would not eject 3.5" shells (case caught in ejection port), turned into a single shot... Would not eject 2.75" field rounds, casing would stick in chamber, unless it was high brass... Total rust bucket of a gun, inside and out... I had sent mine back to Remington 5 times and they replaced it twice. Total turd bucket gun.

Thanks, but I did not want this to turn into a "buy 'x-brand' of shotgun" post. For example Lunkerhunter raved about Nova's, yet my friend has a Bennelli SBE (super black eagle) and it was sent back to the factory a few times and the damn thing still wouldn't work, so he sold it and bought a Remington. In fact, there are probably more 870's in circulation than any other shotgun out there. Sounds like you had a lemon. That sucks, but I'm looking for what people think of the 3.5" 12g being able to shoot three different shells and perhaps how you personally feel about how they compare to a 10g (if you have both). I looked at 10's, but it seems there is more versatility with the 12's. Has anyone else had a bad issue with the 3.5" super mag remington?

I dont want it to be a brand x vs brand y. I just know my experience with the express and wingmaster series shotguns that Remington produces. Ten years ago they may have been a lot better quality. Todays production of them is not the quality Remington produced years ago. I also agree they have the most sold gun on the market, everyone can afford one; however they also have the highest failure rate out of the box on the market as well. I can tell you that the ones I had shot very very well, they were comfortable and had a bit less recoil to them. I also like how the trigger assembly is put together. If you want some more advice on them check out www.shotgunworld.com. There is a lot of pros and cons on different brands and their track records.

Personally if it were me I would stick with the 12g and I really would not go with anything less than the 3.5" chamber as you never know when you may want to get more payload in the sky.

If your ? is 3.5" or not, ABSOLUTELY go with a 3.5"! There are times you have no choice but to shoot them. I can get winchester x-perts in 3 1/2" 2 OR BB's for around $11 a box.[Wink]

My first repeating shotgun was an 870 Wingmaster. I loved it! Still have it today, but I just don't shoot it much now. I've not had the chance to handle the 870 that will shoot the 3.5's. I think the 870 Express kinda muddied the 870 name with cheaper parts, and a gun that would rust easily. I mostly shoot my Nova, and it is great.

Thanks for all the info. I now have the 870 Super Mag in my possession. I found a screaming deal on a brand new, camo, waterfowl edition all three choke tubes, swivel cap on magazine tube as well as the sling. Price was $369.99. To order this same gun brand new (it comes with only one modified choke tube) it is $450.00. The only issue with the gun I bought was there was no carboard box! Got lost at the store. I checked the chamber before I bought it for smoothness and it is very smooth. Unlike a lot of the earlier (1999-2006) express or supermag guns where it appeared that Reminton used dull reamer dies to ream out the chamber; which caused shells to stick or become very difficult to eject due to the roughness. Many owners were polishing the chambers to eliminate this problem rather than sending the gun back to Remington. I already put a box of shells (mixed 2.75", 3" and 3.5") through it this weekend without so much as a hiccup! This will now be my go-to gun for ducks/geese.

Glad to hear you got a good one! I tried to polish mine many times when I had it. I guess I got some really crappy ones. Give it hell, It will be one of the better feeling guns you will ever own.
