I live somewhat by strawberry so I should know some info for you. First I do not belive it has iced off yet, I will double check. Second was he working the river or the lake, cause from the sounds of it he was fly fishing and if it has not iced off then he was on the river.

Okay after checking my sources, I have confirmed there is open water by the ladders and along the edges in some places.

If you use flies wollies have been good. rapalas are doing okay and if you float tube use tube baits and go to the ladders.

My favorite ice off bait is a black marabou jig with either a little flash or white tied into it. I use a casting bubble about 3 ft up the line for added weight and cast it onto the ice. Most strikes seem to come as the jig drops off the ice. Don't worry about fishing too shallow, I've had hits in less than a foot of water. Chicken creek is my lucky spot. Just walk the edge casting to the ice pack and slowly retrieve the jig. I don't know about the conditions but hope the info helps.

Sawdustbob,

Where are you going in Southern California?. I do have info on the San Diego area if you are going to be in that part of the golden state.
