Senior fishing licenses can now be purchased at most DNR property offices, sporting good stores, bait shops or online at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov.
Effective April 1, Indiana residents age 64 and older and born after March 31, 1943, will need either a $3 annual senior fishing license (which is lower than any neighboring state's fee), or a one-time $17 Fish for Life senior license when fishing Indiana's public waters.
Both licenses include trout/salmon stamp privileges.
Residents born before April 1, 1943, are still exempt from needing a fishing license when fishing Indiana's public waters.
The $17 Fish for Life senior license was designed so 64-year-old resident anglers graduating into senior licenses would never have to pay more than if they bought a normal $17 annual fishing license. The Fish for Life license will be the last Indiana fishing license a Hoosier angler will ever need to purchase.
Each senior fishing license sold also earns Indiana an additional $7.90 in federal money. This federal money is divided among states based on the number of fishing licenses sold, and Indiana was losing funds to states counting seniors as anglers.
In 10 years, senior licenses should increase Indiana's cut by an additional $2.3 million in annual federal money for sport fish restoration programs. The funds will also expand and maintain public access to lakes and streams throughout the state.
