Idaho Falls Fly Show
#1
I just wanted to report a couple of things from the Idaho Falls (Snake River Cuthroats) fly show.

First of all my kids had a great time. I have had a fly tying bench for years and my kids have shown no interest in tying. At the show they tied some buggers and then they were given their own pack of tying materials. Most of the materials are outdated and good only for tying bubblegum (brightly colored) flies, but that does not matter to my kids they have been tying away all kinds of creations ever since they got home. You could say they have caught the bug.[cool]

The other thing that was awesome was meeting Dave Whitlock. I have been a huge fan of his flies since I was a teenager. I have been going down to southern Idaho to fish for bass for around 20 years and every year I have tried some of whitlocks patterns that he developed for the flyfishing bassfisherman. It was weird how I felt like I was in the presence of greatness. The whole show was kind of that way. On a scale of one to ten I am about a level two fly tier so seeing all the experts is a bit intimidating.

Anyway just thought that I would report that the show was really good and I am lucky to live only 20 minutes away.

[cool][#008000]Hey there windriver - thanks for stopping by and filling us in on the Idaho show. I think that it is great that your kids finally showed an interest in tying too. Too often they don't want to get in step with their parents. Not a cool things to do amongst their peers. How old are your boys/girls? [/#008000]
[#008000]I have been attending the West Fly Fishing Show held in SoCal for several years. Meeting celebrities be it tiers or fly fishing legends is always a treat. BTW did this reservoir ever fill up to normal levels? I know it's name but do you recognize it?[/#008000]

I am back now. I met a bunch of net folks, but I have short term memory[laugh] I don't remember if I met windriver, but I tied all day Friday, Saturday I went to a funeral in Pocatello and got back to the show around 2:30p.m.
Davy Whitlock is such a great guy. He likes my red hair and kissed my hand. I bet you didn't get that WR, LOL[laugh][laugh]
His drawings are unbelievable. I wanted one of his coffee cups but, was short on money.
Al Beatty, Lynn Scott, Jay Buchner, and a bunch of others. We are talking BIG NAME fly tiers. It was humbling for sure. But I heard I was on the news.
I tied so many #32's and I noticed the camera crew zeroing in. That was cool! Scored some new RIO line, and cast the Sage Z-Axis and the ZXL....NICE! Dennis Brakke from the FLY DESK was there also, so got my indicator supply stocked up again, plus watched him tie his works of art.
Great time, but good to be home.
Oh Yeah! Got out to fish briefly and landed a 19" small mouth bass. I guess there are more and more in the Snake. She was beautiful and FUN!

I wonder why they never had that fly show when I lived in that neck of the woods.

I guess that lint chucking in the 70s and 80s was some thing that you didn't let out of the closet.[crazy]

I am sorry I did not meet you. I was the one dragging around four boys between the ages of 8 and 6 months from about 4:30-6:00 on Friday.

I told my wife that I needed to look for Flygoddess and she defineately looked at me funny.[Smile] I told her you are a friend of BSflies and that set her at ease because she knows and respects Bills opinion.

Dave Whitlocks art was incredible. He gave each of my kids one of the post card size prints. I tried to talk my wife into getting the picture of the browns, cutts, and bows that were on the back wall with the nice frames, but being the practical one she said we needed to put in our lawn, blacktop, etc...

I am sure I must have walked right past you. The news was filming the lady from Japan when I was there.

I have four boys my two oldest are 8 and 6. They both have 6ft 3weights and love fishing the creeks and small ponds for bluegill. My 8 year old is getting quite independent. He can get a good drift on a dry fly, set the hook and release his own fish. The only thing I have to do is fix his wind knots, and fix more wind knots, and retie broken leaders left in trees, and fix more wind knots.[crazy]

I think the picture is of PaliSades Res. Last fall it got down to something like 10% of full. The South Fork of the Snake comes out of PaliSades and is still very, very low. They are letting out as little water as possible until the farmers call for it. We have 105% snow pack so things are looking up as long as the weather stays cool. The problem is that most of the water rights are owned by people outside of the valley, so local conditions have little to do with how much water is called for.

[cool][#008000]Thanks for the up date windriver on PaliSades Reservoir. Hopefully the snow melt will help bring the water levels back to normal.[/#008000]
[#008000]Four boys - now that is great! Glad to hear that they enjoy swatting too. Must be fun teaching and watching your little ones catch their first fish on a fly rod. Good luck to you all.[cool][/#008000]

I am sorry I missed you also. I was out of there by 4 and on the river by 5.
You are right Mac, I am not a name dropper, but these gentlemen and their wives were worth every bit of recognition.
I had my white cowboy hat on Friday (trademark) but Saturday, I didn't. Didn't want to wear on to the Funeral, although it matched my outfit [laugh]
I walked over to Dave Whitlock and wife and said I really needed to shake his hand (by the way, his personalized flies set wet for around $90, sure wished I had one) He kissed the back of my hand, then we shook. I am never washing the back of my hand, so maybe I can come up with some flies as great as his, let alone, improve on my art work.
When I went back to him Saturday, a friend was talking to him so I actually went to talk to my friend. A few minutes later, Davy said "Joni" I looked at him in surprise! He then said he didn't recognize me with out my hat, but that I need to go without it more often. Loved the RED I guess. That was a high light for me.[cool]

The Z-Axis is Sages top of the line LIGHT weight fast action, like Winston's BORON II (BIImx) I have the BIIx in an 8 weight and it is lighter than a couple of my 5 wts. I have no idea on the switch rod end, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was the blank they use because of how light and the action.
The ZXL is a slower action and more like my JWF. It would also be the more closely matched to my LL which Sage no longer makes.
