It has been about five years since the last time I fished Yellowstone lake. I used to go there several times a summer. THe lake trout have had a serious effect on the traditional cutt fishery there.

Fishing just opened and it is still fairly cool up there so I think the cutts would not be too deep yet. I have fished all over the lake but for a float tube I would just go to West Thumb and fish the shore line. I have done well in the past with all types of leeches and buggers. On one particular day I did well with stayner duck tails and prince nymphs. I do not think the fish are that picky it is just a matter of figuring out what depth they are at.

We have not decided where we are going camping next week but there is a chance I will fish it next week.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

I would think fairly seriously consisdered not using a tube on YL.

The lake has restricitions on boat size and how far from shore etc. Having been around YL, hery's,, Hebgen all my life I would make sure I upped my life ins to make sure momma is taken care of.

YL strands , drowns people every year due the lake going from calm to full blown 6-8 ft wasves. Lewis and Shoshsone lake also fit into this category along with the othet lakes.

I agree that you need to pay attention to the waves on YL. I think that you are alright as long as you have a good float tube with two chambers and pay attention to the wind direction. I have been out there in some pretty nasty winds that usually come up about 11AM. The Yellowstone law requires that you have a two chambered tube or toon wear a life vest with a whistle. You also have to purchases a boat permit even for a float tube.

I have always fished Yellowstone Lake within a couple hundred yards of shore. If the wind comes up I do head for the shore line. The waves at Yellowstone lake are nothing to mess with.
