Ok, the conversation under the topic "which fish is bigger" has kind of shifted over to some talk about what produces the big bass that you always see and hear about being caught over here in CA. I figured that I would try and shift that conversation out of that topic seeing as to how most people probably aren't even paying attention to that string of posts anymore due to the dribble that started taking place for a bit in there. LOL. I'll try to answer a few questions...it was asked when bass stop reproducing...answer: all the way up until they die. They don't reach a certain age or size and then stop reproducing. That's why a lot of big bass hunters in CA start talking so strongly about catch and release. It was mentioned that genetics plays a big role in the huge bass we get in CA. That's true. The big bass carry something that a lot of guys simply call...The Big Fish gene. Again, that's why some of the guys around here get pretty touchy with the whole catch and release thing. It's believed by a lot of guys that these big fish should be released to spawn so they can continue to carry on the big fish gene to their offspring. However, because they're that big, they've obviously seen a lot of spawning seasons in their day and obviously have got a bunch of kids already...LoL...that's why I don't get offended as easily as a lot of other CA guys when I see a big one being kept. It was also mentioned that the stocking of trout has a big part in it too...you better believe it. The big bass around here love to munch on those stocking sized trout, and trout are just pure fat for bass. Almost all the big bass lakes in CA are stocked with trout. Someone also posted a pic in that last thread of a 14.6lb largemouth caught by a guy named Rob Belloni AKA Swimbait. He's one of the big bass hunters here and one of those guys that'll freak out if he hear's anything about a big bass being kept. LoL. But that 14.6 is nothin'. Rob has no trouble catching fish that size, but just last weekened he caught his personal best weighing in at 18lbs. You want to see a big bass...check this out!!

Hey Sturgeonkid,
What town are you living in in Cal?. What promted your move from Utah?. I have a possible opportunity for a job in Cal, and was just wondering about rents and quality of life. I heard rumors of outrageous rent, and not sure if I could go back to the traffic and lack of solitude. Sure miss the ocean and big largemouth though. Any insights?.
Curious, Kayote

Hey Walleye Paul...
I'm living in the bay area...Antioch to be more specific. The two bodies of water that I frequent the most are a little reservoir about 6 miles from my house called Contra Loma, and then I of course fish the Delta. I also fish lakes like Clear Lake, Lake McClure, Don Pedro, and New Melones, but most usually only if I'm headed to a tournament at one of them.
We seem to have a lot of guys up there in UT who were originally based here in CA...

Hey Guys...
The bass was caught out of San Pablo on a swimbait...what do you expect from a guy named swimbait? Also, this fish just goes to prove that bass will continue to spawn up until they die because this fish was spawning when he caught it. See the bottom of it's tail? LOL. Anywho, I forgot to mention that you can check out Rob's whole story here: http://www.calfishing.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2743&mesg_id=2743&page=
Now, I probably shouldn't be giving CA all the glory for being the only place to produce bass this size...seeing as to how the biggest bass caught so far in the world this year was caught in Japan! I personally had no idea that they were producing them this big over there, but I guess that's because the record in Japan before this bass was only 14lbs. But check out this bad girl weighin' in at 19lbs 4oz!!

Hey Kayote...
Ya, like I mentioned, I'm living in Antioch. There's a couple of different things that promoted my move from UT, but the main reason is basically because my family in UT moved to Las Vegas. LOL. They moved to vegas and I still had half of my high school senior year left. I figured I was sick of going to school anyways, so I decided to try coming here to CA to live with my dad and step-mom for a little while and finish off my high school credit by just doing packets (which I should be dun with in a week or two...WooHoo!) Then once I get high school done and out of the way with here real soon, I'm going to start focusing on the whole bass tournament scene a little more and start really working towards gettings a boat (which my goal is still to have by the end of the year...LoL). Then next year I'm going to try the whole professional bass fishing thing for a year and just kind of have some fun with that and see how it turns out for me.
As for the rents and quality of life in CA...in all honesty, from what I know Utah has become practically just as bad as California as far as housing and living costs and such. Traffic is also the same deal...it's no worse here than in UT. So if these are the reasons that are holding you back from looking more into it...It's not much of a huge difference. I would look into it a little bit more if I were you if you are serious about it. And finding solitude isn't always much of a problem either...especially if you fish places like the Delta where even though you've got hundreds of boats out on the water, there are SO many backwaters and sloughs that you can easily go some places and not see another boat all day long... hehe [cool]

Hey, thanks for the info Sturgeon Kid. That's good to know about the delta. I fish San Diego bass lakes a couple times a year and it's a joke with the crowds. I just read an article about those bass in Japan. Seems there's some controversy about the impacts to native food fish. They want to eradicate them in many waters. Did you know they also have largemouths in South Africa?.

Hey Kayote...
Yeh, I too heard about them wanting to get rid of the bass in Japan. That really is a shame too seeing as to how they've obviously got world record potention over there if they're producing 19lb fish. Bummer. We may get a big flood of japanese bass fishermen to CA here if they end up trying to get rid of their little green friends. LOL.
Ya, there's apparently bass all over the world. I hear they don't exactly use the traditional bass fishing techniques over there in South Africa. I thought I remembered hearing a rumor of there being more of a fly-fishing kind of deal there, but they're just as serious about their bassin' as we are in the states. LoL. Italy is also big with the bassin'...

Nope, I haven't been to Dixon yet, or any of those southern waters. It's a good 8+ hour drive for me to get to Dixon.

Thank goodness the Japanese like bass fishing, otherwise we wouldn't have all those great products from Gamakatsu and Diichi and Yo-Zuri etc. etc., etc.

[cool]If you can make friends with Fidel Castro, you should hit Cuba for big largies. A business associate in Florida, with the "inside" on Cuba, says there have been largemouths over 25 pounds taken from Cuban waters. Most are taken by "subsistence" fishermen using nets or "Dupont spinners" (dynamite).
He also says there are some lakes controlled by the government, and off limits to fishing, that hold populations of super largemouths. If that doesn't make you wanna start a revolution to overthrow the Castro regime, I don't know what does.
For sheer big and tough though, I gotta book me a trip to Venezuela...and get me some of those peacock bass. I don't care about a world record largie. I would just like to hook a few of those mean, nasty topwater hittin' peacocks down in the jungle. Might never get me back in the states. But I don't think I would be float tubin' it. Too many big critters with teeth, stingers and electric shock organs down there. I'll be in a boat, thank you.

Pat, I've caught bass in Puerto Rico, though no trophies. People there aren't interested in trophies--just meat. Though I'm sure they could grown big mama cahunas if they tried. In Spanish bass are called lobina, as in lobo, as in wolf--quite appropriate. We did catch a bunch of crayfish that were a foot long.
