Through fall into late October, the streams in northwest Indiana will be home for spawning salmon. The fishing will be hot and heavy by late September as the creeks cool and new fish continue to migrate upstream to set up spawning beds. Watch for areas holding gravel with deeper pools just downstream. Small spinners and spawn bags generally produce the best catches.
Early morning and early evening are prime times to wet a line. In addition to salmon, steelhead trout will enter the streams for their spawning next spring. These chrome beauties will be available from early September through April of the following year. Spinners, flies and shrimp are the best bets for bait.
In addition to the streams in northwest Indiana, the St. Joseph River in South Bend has one of the best steelhead fisheries in the entire Great Lakes region. To view a video about steelhead spawning and stocking, go to http://www.in.gov/dnr/12462.htm.
