Big stripers at mead
#1
I know there are some large stripers in lake mead. I know this because all I ever see caught are 1 to 5 pounders and I also know stripers get much larger than this. I am very good at targeting saltwater striper monsters but the techniques do not seem to work in freshwater. I am calling out to all of you veteran striper fisherman to try and target the big ones. What would you do to look for the big fish this time of year. Where, how, bait, rigging, the works. I come from a saltwater background as I said before and I am getting itchy for some big fish.

Most of the larger stripers in the area are found on Mojave as opposed to Mead. But Mead has its monsters too. The majority of truly big fish come on large trout imitators fished near the trout stocking sites. AC Plugs, LA Sliders, Huddleston’s, Castaic Baits and the like are good choices. Trout stocking on Mead should begin in the next few weeks. The schedule is printed in the sports page on Thursdays. Of course to throw these you need the big heavy tackle, but you knew that. That’s the only way I know of that guys target large fish on Mead with any consistency.

To your earlier question about netting shad, don’t have much experience in that personally so cant offer a lot…but I have heard recent reports that the shad are shallow in the backs of coves in the Vegas Wash/33 Hole area, being pursed by mostly smallish stripers with a handful of LMB in the mix as well. Bay Sport seems to be the expert on netting shad, he may check in with some tips. Good luck!

Check out the Nevada Striper Club at www.nevadastriperclub.org these guys fish for large stripers all the time.

Also check out www.acplugs.com These guys fish for the big cows!

The biggest striper I've ever caught on Lake Mead is 5.5 lbs. on live bait off Sand Island. Thought about targeting larger fish in the winter but always end up fishing for lots of smaller ones instead.

Dan79 nailed that on the head. I will start throwing big trout imitators as soon as they start stocking rainbows. I've seen guys pull fish as big as 24lbs in the winter like this. I'll be trying it all winter long. Good luck to you. I want something double-digit too.

Hello TDOG

All the above is true information. If you have a boat starting November 21 the NDOW will start planting trout every Friday at Lake Mead. One spot is near the fishing pier on Boulder Beach. The other area's Saddle cove is closed until 2012. They have not said where the new location will be.

Either from Boat or shore once the water temp is below 70 degrees the big ones come out. They roam the shorelines in shallow water looking for something to kill.
Casting big lures and slow trolling. is very productive.

Down below the dam is great all year long. The water stays cold 60 and below and they plant trout every friday.
Casting from shore is great all year long. Here is a picture from the day after Thanksgiving last year.
Good luck and hope to see some of your reports.
