BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers 8/11/01

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 8/11/01

This week brought a mixed bag of stripers and blues from both Boston Harbor and the ledges off the South Shore. Surface action in Quincy and Dorchester bays was excellent as bass were feeding on silversides and juvenile herring on the morning ebb tide. Off Minot’s and the Glades keeper-size bass in the 28-33 inch size class were numerous, however big fish were scarce this week.

Craig Bennett of Jefferies Co., Boston and lovely friend Katie found surface feeding bass in Quincy at the week’s start. The best producer on the long rod was 2/0 white gurgler surface presentations and blue and white Clouser’s on DepthCharge line. This week, Bassin’ Specialities of Abington,MA, deep-slugs in pearl and rainbow smelt rigged with 5/0 offset worm hooks, fished on the surface, outfished just about every presentation. Orvis 16 pound coated wire that can be tied with all the usual knots kept the occasional piranhas at bay. Typically women outfish the men. Katie’s personal best 33-inch keeper once again proved the rule.

John Black from Scituate,MA and client and John Visco and friend Joe from Pemberton,NJ had similar results in Quincy Bay early and a flurry of surface feeding bass in Dorchester later in the ebbing tide on Monday and Tuesday. Once again silversides were the bait in evidence. Moving to the glades off Scituate, we found keeper-size bass in the 28-32 inch size class on the ledges on the first few hours of the flood. Further, we had follows from bigger 36-40 inch bass right to the boat, using Keer’s epoxy-head herring pattern, but no takers due to the high sun.

At week’s end both morning and afternoon departures from Rowe’s Wharf were productive. Quincy bay was again the Hotspot. Craig Bennett of Boston entertained clients on Thursday afternoon while Gene Deporis of Sarasota, Fl, in Boston on business, entertained himself catching linesides on Friday morning. Surface presenations were again the ticket. Gene’s 34-inch keeper took top honors.

The dreaded east wind followed the frontal passage and end of the heat wave on Saturday. The only significant action was in Quincy bay. Only surface presentations were productive. Plenty of fish were in evidence on the surface and on the fish finder. The highlight of John Allen’s DU Boston trip was cheering on his good friend Ron Gwozdz of Weston, MA as is did battle with a 32 inch keeper that exploded, at first light, on a white gurgler on the long rod. White and Rainbow smelt Slug-gos were also productive, however the action continued only for the first hours of the ebb.

Capt.
