#1
Hey there, I live just south of the border from you guys, in SE Idaho, and I was wondering if anybody on here has ever fished Lightning Lake in the Beartooth mountains. I'm thinking of making a trip there next year, so any advice on trail conditions, best way to get there, flies (or bait/lures etc) to use, pics, etc would be very helpfull.
Thanks

Hey, I don't normally reply to my own posts, but I thought I'd bump this one up to see if anybody knows anything yet.
Thanks

just browsing the montana sight. Its pretty dead. OH WELL!! lets see if it gets more visitors this spring

I might be able to help you out on the Beartooths I used to fish them all the time

About two years ago I lived in a small town in Montana it was called Bear Creek.

North of Cody WY and South of Red Lodge MT, Right at the base of the Beartooths.

As you know they border the park and are a very wild range. I hiked into a number of the different lakes throughout the area but dont remember Lightning Lake. Is it in MT or WY? I know more about the MT lakes on the north side of the pass road. Its all the same up their too me as far as fishing goes.

When I started looking into fishing these lakes I found a good guide book that told me how to find all the lakes, what lakes had fish what lakes didnt have fish what kind of fish you would be more likely to catch and what condition the lake was in if the fish were in SHOCK or living healthy with cutts and brookies in balance. all sorts of other helpful info like which lake is more likely to see a bear!! ( I came across one that I didnt know I was following down the canyon probably the majority of the time)
anyway, I think it was the Montana Fishing Guide for Absaroke/Beartooth mountains. Really forgot the name and author but the book is popular enough to find if you look hard enough. I think it is a good tool to find locations and milage before you attempt to go out.
Fishing was great I always caught fish FAST action and hungry little fighters.
Used a 4 weight fly rod most of the time and fished with dry dropper combos with anything from hoppers and prince nymphs to caddis and a copper john they hit streamers as well. Almost anything you throw will get something.

I would love to get back out their this summer but have so many other trips planned I doubt I will make it that far North East from salt lake.

Are you planning a trip or just inquiring?
I hope your planning a trip let me know I would love to hear how it goes!!

PS keep on posting in the MT forum I like to look at it as well as UT ID WY its always fun to chat
PSS I like your Pike SKULL that is what it is right
