Father And Son Win MWC Big Stone Tournament

ORTONVILLE, MN--Local father-and-son duo Terry and John Oakes plied skinny water with jigs and crankbaits to amass an amazing 35.53-pound first-place weight at the Cabela's Masters Walleye Circuit's Berkley Trilene/Ranger Boats Big Stone Lake Tournament May 17-18.

Terry, of Big Stone City, South Dakota, and son John of Ortonville, focused on water averaging two feet or less in depth around Big Stone's southern islands. On Day One, they caught most of their fish on 1/8-ounce Cabela's ball-head jigs tipped with lip-hooked fatheads; small, shad-imitating crankbaits were the hot ticket on Day Two.

The Oakes' catch was worth $19,000 plus an additional $975 for big-fish honors on Sunday. In all, the top 24 teams in the 142-team field shared a $68,700 cash purse. An additional $4,948 was paid in big-fish prizes. Fourth-place finishers, longtime NAFC members Glenn and Carol Chenier of Gladstone, Michigan, earned $5,000 plus $1,000 as the highest placing Ranger Boats team in the Ranger Cup series. The MWC Conservation Fund awarded $2,130 to Wildlife Forever for use with local shoreline improvement projects.

Next stop on the MWC is Upper Michigan's Big and Little Bays de Noc at Gladstone and Escanaba, Michigan, September 13-14.
