Ice bath at Mud Lake/Roberts gravel pond report.
#1
Sorry so long but its the story from today. So we made a trip today to mud lake and back down to Roberts gravel pond to basically check the ice for the weekend. on arrival to mud lake we saw probably 20 people on the ice in a a big circle around a 50 yard section we came around the corner at the first parking spot on the north side and were completely in shock as we pulled up on two fire trucks an ambulance two state police officers and about 4 regular pickup trucks instantly any one can guess what had happened somebody went through the ice!!!!!!!![:/] It honestly gave me the one of the most gut wrenching filling i have ever experianced
so we stopped not to help because they obviously had enough help but we were more interested in his safety as soon as we started down the path 2 paramedics escorted a man who was soaked and frozen about to the belly button He looked to be in his 50's to 60's and was obviously very cold judging by the intense shivering i saw he had been out on the ice wondering around looking for a good place to put a hole and had wondered on to a soft spot once in he could not get himself out. well they stripped him down and put him the ambulance eventually life flight came and picked the man up. we talked to the police officers and some other fishermen and founf out the ice was actually pretty good he had just found a thin spot and went through. so we went about a quarter mile west and ventured on too the ice so cautious it took us an hour to deploy 5 holes we fished there for about 2 hours with out a single bite packed up our stuff and headed to roberts gravel pond we got to the pond and there were other ice fisherman there so we went out and drilled some holes and started fishing we couldnt keep the perch off of our line they were just going nuts we fished until dark never catching a perch over 5 inches but it was better than catching nothing. oh and for those of you who havnt used perch eyes and meat as bait i have a testament i will never again waist an entire container of mealies on perch again i will say perch meat even works better. we also caught one and hooked one trout on power bait there but they were both tiny.

Wow that is the first serious dunking I have heard of in a few years around here. I am sure it happens more than we know. Lets hope the man is going to be ok.

Thanks for the report.

Was this the one reported on the news, where a snowmobile was pulling a sled, and they went in the drink? It was at Mud Lake.

I didn't get the details of what happened yet. As to the other question. Mud Lake winter kills almost every year. It usually is not a complete kill and the perch seem to rebound pretty fast.

[crazy] Freaking nuts, that pretty much sums it up. It's early ice season. What did they think would happen. Try it again when there is about a foot and a half of ice. It should hold then.
