Roberts Perch Masacre
#1
Before I came down into the basement to type this; I looked where there was once a sink in my kitchen and I see the doom that lays before me--it is filled with 235 perch that my son and I caught at Roberts from 1:45-5:00 pm. Before I start filleting I believe I will pop four pain killers, as the back is already sore. As regards to fishing it was fast and furious with fish caught on a small green shrimp style jig sometimes with a perch eye, but many were caught without any bait what so ever. I will mention that my new ice cube allowed us to see when fish took the bait, so we had quick hook ups. We did catch one small trout. Ice is a good clear six inches. I am curious if anyone can estimate how many perch there are in Roberts, as most of you know they are 9/10 five inches. I don't know if its possible to make an actual dent in the population where fish could grow to a reasonable size. Many have mentioned this, but if you have kids this is the place for them to catch many fish and develops a new generation of fishermen/women.

This may be my last post for awhile, as I will be filleting for a couple of weeks[Wink]

Can you get to Roberts pond with a car or do you need a pickup?

How about a picture of the lure/fly you used and any other pictures you may have.

Thats my kind of perch fishing! Way to go. The first time I filleted fish was a 5 gallon bucket full of 6-9 inch perch. Many many many hours latter I was pretty darn good at filleting fish! Anytime someone asks for filleting techniques I tell them to get a bucket of perch and when you can see the bottom you will be a pro. Is "Roberts" the horse shoe shaped lake east of the town of robert?

What is the limit on perch? I thought it was 50 but I was just looking and I can't seem to find anywhere where it says. I'm heading out there tommorow morning.

iliketofish,

It is good to make sure; I know in Utah some waters like Yuba have a limit of ten perch, however, I know of no waters like this in Idaho. Although it is possible to catch and release in Roberts, I would encourage everyone to keep every perch they catch from this place. There are so many that very few ever make it above five inches. The competition for food is a hard one and fewer numbers make larger fish. I would trade 30 9-10' inch perch versus 200 + 5' inch ones any day.

Thanks for the info. I agree, they looked pretty dang stunted. I made it out today for about three hours and ended up taking home 93. I'm about 2/3 done filleting them, only one small cut on my pinkie so far, and one minor hand cramp [crazy].

I took the wife and one of the boys to Roberts Saturday and they had a good time. We brought home 103 perch. It took me forever to fillet them. The ice cube shelter and heater is nice when the wife goes. She stayed warm and managed to catch the most fish. Some other people left a bunch of perch on the ice. I would have brought them home but some looked like they had been there for awhile. The birds had been eating them. Its good to thin the population but I think we should eat what we kill.

That's great that you got out with your wife. I was camping and ice fishing in Montana at -18 degrees. I will show you pics later. I agree we should not waist any fish.

What is the best way fillet a 5" pearch?

Down the backbone from gill to tail but leaving it attached, flip and remove the skin, Cut the ribs out?

That is a good question next time I do it I will have to take pics and make an explanation. In simple terms what you say is correct. I have a method that I use a flexible knife to follow the ribs but not cut into them. It saves me a step but it is too complicated for me to explain I will have to take pics.
