Friday Trout Plant
#1
Friday, 01/02/09- Hit the water early (6:00am). Cold and dark. Dragged rattling lures along the Boulder Beach shore, back and forth, shallow and deep, with no takers. Sunrise brought more boats doing the same. Looked forward to the trout plant. Trucks began to arrive, parking near the fishing dock and along the shoreline. More boats arrived. Soon the big truck showed up. Pulled up the trolling rigs, grabbed the pole with the big AC Plug.

NDOW Truck gets ready to unload trout.

There must have been 15 boats on hand and at least that many anglers on shore. As the trout were dumped the lures were tossed. A lot of lures. I did my share. Nothing. Soon I was heading slowly along the shoreline casting in every direction. Nothing. The hard part was keeping out of everyone's way. Those big lures cast far so everyone needs a lot of room.

Part of the fleet at the trout plant.

After casting a million times, decided to head to Crawdad cove.

On the way to Crawdad Cove, stopped and talked to this angler. Standing on a surfboard, one paddle, and a pole stuck in his belt, he was searching for a cow. Was working the Saddle Island wall near the intake tower.

Crawdad cove. Several boats were trolling back and forth.

Nice day on the water.......no fish. [frown] Maybe next time.

I saw that guy on the board. Little cold for that, don't you think? You would'nt catch me with my feet in the water! Just imagine the sleigh ride that guy would go on if he hooked up big time!

I went off the shore saturday and nothing not even a hit. Did see a little boy catch a small trout. I still bet you had more fun than i did at work!

Nice report as always, like the pics too... But let me understand, the guy on the surf board....he stands up, keeping his balance and propels himself with the one oar? And casts and what not while standing on the board. That’s die hard, I cant hardly believe that. And the water temp is where in the low 50's somewhere I would guess.... Wow that’s something else.

Hello,

I was up there at Crawdad Cove as well. I tell you what, that place was packed with boaters and shore anglers for the trout plant. I trolled and cast most everything I had from sunrise till about 2 in the afternoon that day without any action at all. Good to hear that it wasn't just me getting skunked.

Thanks for the report BaySport.

Your telling me! Feet get cold in my boat with tundra boots and wool socks. [shocked]

Just imagine the sleigh ride that guy would go on if he hooked up big time!

Asked the guy what his personal best was and he said 15lbs. Said his goal was 20lbs!

That's right, hard to believe, that's why I took a picture. Nice guy too. Keep in mind he was not just tooling around Boulder Cove, he was out in the lake dragging a lure. I agree....... diehard.

For sure a diehard... And I thought I was cool for kayak fishing in the winter. All these float tubers and surf boarders make me look like a wuss!

Boy is that the truth! I always feel better when I'm not the only one getting skunked. [Wink]

Wuss? Naw, no way.

Personally, I lump all of the above into the same group. You all keep it simple and enjoy yourselves as much as anyone. It is cool! Still got my 17' canoe in the backyard reminding me of times past.

How bout those crazies back east that use wetsuit and fins to swim past the breakers at night, float on their backs, and cast for big stripers? [crazy] Or the insane guys that launch their kayaks from power boats, way out off the Southern California coast, and hook into big mako sharks? [shocked] No thanks.

I really want to do one of those long range mothership trips. They take you out to Mexico and you can fish for big yellowfin from the kayak! That would be awesome!
As for those insane people that fish from a wetsuit for 50+ lb stripers on the ocean....AT NIGHT! I think they need a mental check-up, but that's just me.

Where are you finding the stock reports? I checked NDOW and all they had was up to the end of 08. I am planning on spending MLK weekend camping at Cottonwood. Would be nice to know if they were planting that weekend. I might get my toon on the water.

Called them and asked if I could fish from it within the marina (string up a piece of popcorn and try and hook one of those huge carp on a flyrod) I was told no. That I had to be outside the wake area. That is a long ways to paddle my toon. I may still try.

When I was 7 or 8, I was down at cottonwood, and I almost got in some big trouble for netting carp from the dock (I didn't know any better - hey its not fishing, right?) I had a swarm of dock employees screaming at me and I got a good lashing from a ranger. Ahhh, good times...

I get my stocking info by calling (702) 486-6738. They have a weekly updated message about all the stock points and times. Pretty valuable info. Sometimes its hard to find elsewhere.
