I heard Ririe was slow on Saturday. Not for some of the fishermen who got there before most of the four-wheelers and snowmachine started running around.
Want success on Ririe - get away from the crowd or get there early before all the activity starts. Change the depth of you lures to deeper during the day. Around noon the kokes were 25 to 30 feet down. I saw groups with 20 to 30 kokes on the ice and I got my kokes by 9 a.m. and 14 perch before noon.
Everytime a four wheeler would come by or someone near me would start a power auger, the fish would disappear. Half an hour later they would start hitting again.

I was fishing south of the boat ramp - almost the last group to the south.

I thought about going south, last year I did real good off the point coming out from under the house. But there was already somebody there Saturday morning so I went on the west side. Of course next weekend the west side will be hot and south will be slow. You could go crazy trying to figure those Kokes out. Sure fun to try.

Everyone we talked to said that they did poorly on Saturday. My Dad and I both caught our limits and then caught an released another twenty fish or so (each). I am not sure why people were not catching them.
I did see a lot of yahoos out there. Some of them had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Perhaps that is why we are seeing bad reports from Ririe.
By the way, what size are the perch on Ririe?

The smallest perch I have caught this year was around 7" and the largest one 11" with most of them in the 8-10" range. I am still hoping to catch a couple 12+monsters like I did last year.

Just wanted to concur with a comment you made, RedLeech. I was on the water on Sunday. Very slow fishing. I couldn't believe the numer of ice fishing folks on the water and all the noise that comes with over a hundred anglers on the upper end and augers running and 4-wheelers running around. I think I will go back on a weekday morning sometime soon.

I was Ririe on Saturday as well we got there early and moved away from the crowds it didn't matter it was slow for us as well we had two vexlars and only marked one school of koke's come through they only stayed a few seconds we only landed one, some guys 20 ft to the north of us caught about six using the same equipment as us so i wouldn't pat your self on the back to hard for limiting out if you can get a school under ya you will catch them... pretty simple

I guess I am a Yahoo who doesn't know what I am doing (I've caught a ton of Kokes this year). You're either in them or you're not. Sometimes you just need dumb luck to find the Kokanee, go back the next day to the same hole use the same gear and get skunked. I like to call it fishing.

There is some truth to what Davefisherman said. He was not necessarily refering to you.[cool] As I have walked among the hundreds of Kokanee fishermen at Ririe over the last few weeks. I can say that there are many who are just not setting themselves up well for success.
That is what this site is all about, sharing information so that we can all be successful when possible. Non of us will be successful everytime. As random as kokanee are there are many things that a person can do that will increase their odds of catching them.
I look forward to getting after them again this weekend.

Hit Ririe today with three friends. Was there for about 3 hours and didn't even get a nibble. It was my first time out ice fishing on Ririe...I don't know if we were doing something wrong or if it was really slow. There were only 3 other groups out on the ice. It was pretty cold out there!

Kokanee are hard to get the hang of. If you can go out Sat. and walk around. See what the people who are being successful are doing. Like has been mentioniond Kokanee are one of the most random fish that there are. You can increase your odds by learning the successful techniques, but even then there are no guarantees.

I really was not trying to offend anyone. I thought the word Yahoo was not too offensive. Sorry if it came out that way. When there is a lot of noise on the ice there seems to be a lot less fish caught. On another day, we were fishing on ririe and started catching fish. Some nearby anglers saw that we were catching fish and came running with their power auger. They drilled a hole so close that some of their ice chips were hitting the back legs of my chair. That put the fish down as effectively as anything could. This may have been why the fishing was poor for some on Saturday.
I did run into one group of anglers who were fishing entirely with tip ups. My experience has been that you will significantly reduce your chances of catching a kokanee if the rod is not in your hand. I also saw a couple of people who were fishing with salmon fishing rods and the like. One person had the butt section of a rod with no tip. If you can catch kokanee without any flex in your rod you are a much better fisherman than I am.
Again, I should not have used the word Yahoo for those who did not catch fish and I apologise if I offended anyone.

I knew you were not talking about the responsible fishermen on this forum.[angelic] I heard from responsible sources that some people were spinning there fourwheelers all over the place and with all the augers going I am sure that the fish were shell shocked in places.
I always try to drill a ton of holes before light and then let the area settle down as the light comes up. Not always possible, but it does seem to increase my odds on busy weekends.
I have got to quit talking about it and just get ready for this weekend. [laugh]
